James "Jim" Mitchell age 85 of Fredericksburg, IA, died Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at Tripoli Nursing & Rehab. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 12, 2023 at United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Hugh Mackintosh CLM presiding. Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in Fredericksburg has been entrusted with arrangements. Jim was born on November 23, 1937 in Muscatine, Iowa to James & Emma (Bunn) Mitchell. Jim enlisted in the US Navy in his youth and proudly served aboard the USS Forrestal Aircraft Carrier. He was part of the ship’s maiden voyage. In 1959, Jim married Nancy Gaffney and their 40 year marriage lasted until her passing in 1999. Despite this loss, he found love again with Carol Schulz in 2000. Jim was a quiet, gentle person that enjoyed reading, fishing, camping, and researching on his IPAD. He also enjoyed an occasional trip to Marquette to try his luck at gambling. He loved watching his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim is survived by his beloved partner of 23 years Carol Schulz; Children Lynne Harris, Kathy (Curt) Gruenberg, Mike Mitchell, and Cindy Mitchell; and his sister, Patricia (Dan) Becker. He is also survived by Lori (Leon) Franzen, Bob (Theresa) Schulz, and Bill (Jennifer) Schulz; 13 Grandchildren; 18 Great-Grandchildren; Sister-In-Law Mary Mitchell; and Brothers-In-Law Dean Speicher and Jim Gaffney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Nancy in 1999; siblings Jacque Mitchell, Shirlee Howe, and Judy Speicher; and Granddaughter Kari Harris.   6. I first met Jim in 1984 when he moved his family out here to California from Iowa. I have good memory’s of him. He was a good man. He will be missed.

  7. I worked with Jim during the 90’s in Blair, Wis. A good man, so great to work with him. My wife & I spent time with Jim & Nancy manning the kitchen at the company annual picnic, serving up to 2,000 patrons. Teaming up with Jim and new technology on the job was fun creating ways to track production data. God’s peace to all his family and loved ones, we just never know how far the ripples of a good life will travel.
