Marcus H. Mahlstedt was born October 26, 1932, in rural Chickasaw County, IA, near Fredericksburg, the son of Edward and Marie (Wendt) Mahlstedt. He received his education in rural country school and was a 1952 graduate of the Nashua High School. On August 12, 1952 he was inducted into the United States Air Force and served for over 10 years. In 1955, he married Violet Conklin. To this union seven children were born. The couple later divorced. On September 25, 1966, at St. John Lutheran Church in Nashua, he married Linda McDaniel.
Following his military service, Marcus farmed for a brief time and then went to work for Hydrotile from 1965 until the company closed 28 years later. He enjoyed fishing and hunting in his early years and was also on a bowling league for a few years. He was later on the dart-ball team at St. John Church where he really enjoyed the fellowship of his team. Marcus started collecting toy tractors many years ago.
