Fred was born on June 25, 1938. He attended country grade school in Butler County, one-half mile from the farm where he was born and raised, and farmed for many years later with his father. He worked for Oliver Manufacturing, John Deere, and Allied Road Construction for a few years after graduating from Plainfield High School in 1956. While working road construction, he met Marlys Sinnott at a roller skating rink in West Union. They married on January 15, 1961, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. She passed away May 10, 2009. Also preceding him in death include his parents, Louis and Lydia, and one sister, Sylvia Schafer (married to Lyle Schafer), of Greene.
Fred and Marlys worked together on their dairy farm for many years. Fred also worked as a painter, did custom bailing, and later worked for GMT Corporation in Waverly up until his retirement. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ - Pleasant Hill, Nashua. Fred loved country western and gospel music. He always enjoyed spending time with his friends and cousins. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and their children.
