Eugene David Johnson, age 59 of Plainfield, Iowa died Sunday, January 24, 2010, at the Waverly Health Center.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday January 28, 2010, at the United Methodist Church, Nashua with Pastor Okitakoyi Lundula officiating.
Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery with Tracy Slocum, Chase Slocum, Anthony Nichols, Pat Weber, Shaylon Lahr, Chris Wagner, Zack Bond, Brandon Wagner, Brian Bilharz, Bryce Bilharz, Jeremy Bilharz and Blaine Bilharz as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Whitney Bond, Brooklyn Bilharz, Sydnie Slocum, Jaycie Bilharz.
Friends may call 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Wednesday January 27, 2010, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday.
Gene was born April 12, 1950, in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Barbara (Minkler) Johnson. He received his education in Tripoli graduating from the Tripoli High School in 1969. He then attended Wartburg College with a scholarship for wrestling and football, graduating in 1973 with a teaching degree. In 1971, he married Cherie Smith of Plainfield. To this union two daughters were born. The couple later divorced. On June 30, 1990, he then married Linda Wedeking in Nashua.
On April 9, 1973, Gene began the career he loved, working for John Deere. He was planning on retiring this spring. He was a member of the Oddfellows in Shell Rock, the Sons of the Amvets in Waverly and the UAW Local 838.
In his free time he enjoyed fishing, dartball, polka dancing with Linda and spending time with his children and grandchildren, in all their events. Gene was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and proudly shared his newly remodeled Carrville Cabin.
Gene and Linda enjoyed various sight-seeing journeys that often led to the nearest casino.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of Plainfield; two daughters, Cherijean (Tracy) Slocum and Michelle Johnson (Pat Weber) all of Allison; one step-daughter, Michelle Bond (Chris Wagner) of Nashua; two step-sons, Brian (Brenda) Bilharz and Jeremy (Kaylee) Bilharz all of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Chase and Sydnie Slocum, Anthony Nichols, Shaylon Lahr, Whitney and Zack Bond, Bryce and Brooklyn Bilharz, Blaine and Jaycie Bilharz; one brother, Glenn (Lorene) Johnson of Nashua; two sisters, Judy Matthias of Waterloo and Susan (Robert) Ferrie of Plainfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Frank Johnson; one brother-in-law, Victor Matthias; one niece, Paula Tuft.

We are so sorry to hear about the loss of your father, husband and friend. We just heard about it last night and was unable to make arrangements to attend the funeral, but are prayers and thoughts are with you on this day and days to come. We had good times going to the tractor pulls and camping (even the water fights we used to have). We will never forget those good times with a friend who loved life.
Linda, You have my deepest sympaty. I certainly enjoyed our visits about the ‘good ole days’ of the Johnson boys living by me. I was shocked to see it in the paper. Hold tight to the many good memories you have shared.

Linda and family: We were very saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Gene. We always enjoyed the time that we spent with him and thought alot of his friendship and kindness. Although it is sometimes hard to understand why these things happen, we need to trust in the Lord and keep your memories of Gene close to your heart, and he will always be near.
