Ethelyn was born August 3, 1925, on the Cook family farm north of Nashua in rural Chickasaw County, IA, the daughter of Claude and Blanche (Carey) Cook. After high school education, she started a life-long career teaching children, first in country schools around Chickasaw County and then in the Sumner School District. On August 6, 1953, in Fredericksburg, she married Roger McFarland. While teaching full time and being a wife and mother, Ethelyn continued her education and received her Bachelor’s Degree from Upper Iowa University and her Master’s Degree from UNI. In 1987, she retired from the Sumner School District where she had been a fourth grade teacher for twenty nine years.
Some of Ethelyn’s favorite things were dancing to the big bands in Spillville, golfing, card playing, (she always won), reading, holidays and special times with her family and friends. She will be remembered for her great sense of humor.
Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of fifty six years, Roger “Jim” McFarland; one son, Bob (Cynthia) McFarland of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Barb Fenton of Urbandale; three grandchildren, Rochelle, Nathaniel and Alexandra McFarland of Cedar Rapids; one sister, Orah Greenfield of Hampton, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lyle Cook, Harland Cook; one sister, Ednah Clouse and son-in-law; Ray Fenton.
We are so sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Sincere sympathy to Jim and all the family.
My mother, Darlene Schwickerath, has been gone now for 10 years but I remember her card playing pals at the Fredericksburg Golf Course. Every once in awhile I would go with her or stop in and I always remember what fun Ethelyn was. She had such a great sense of humor! It is such a loss for your family but what a treasure she was….my sympathy…..
We were very sorry to hear of Aunt Ethelyn’s passing. We will remember their trip to California to come to our wedding. We also remember their trip to California when they were on the TV show ‘The Price is Right’. They won a CAR! Ednah will be happy to see her again.
On behalf of all the Scott’s from Sumner, we extend our sympathies on Mrs. McFarland’s passing. Several of us had her for our teacher, including myself. She was tough but we learned a lot and though I had not seen her for many years, do remember her from that year in her class. My father, John, made sure we saw that she had passed and had only good things to say about her as a fellow teacher in the Sumner system. Sincerely, Dianne (Scott) Fuller Sumner, Iowa
Barb, May the blessed memories of your mother keep you through this difficult time. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Laurie
