Cletus “Clete” J. Welter age 59 of New Hampton died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, May 30, 2011, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Music for the service will be provided by the Lau family. Placing the pall will be Pam and their children. Lectors for the service are ZoAnn Bear and Jeanette Hendricks. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Rita Kiefer, Jean Thiesen, Don Welter and Jim Welter. Pallbearers are Terry Theisen, Ken Kiefer, Brian Welter, Dave Dunn, Jim Welter and Don Welter. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Meyerhoffer, Darryl Dietzenbach, Loren Dietzenbach, Ray Wright, Ron Underwood, Richard Welter, Randy Mitchell, J.C. Schnurr, Tony Gotto, LeRoy Bobst and Rick Bliele.
Friends may greet the family 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 5:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continues one hour prior to the Mass at church on Monday. A second visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon, Tuesday, May 31, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Epworth, Iowa with interment in the church cemetery to follow.
Cletus “Clete” J. Welter was born December 6, 1951, in Farley, IA, the son of Carl and Mary (Griffin) Welter. He received his elementary education in Epworth and was a 1970 graduate of the West Dubuque High School. Clete then attended Hawkeye Tech. in Waterloo where he became an electrical technician. On April 24, 1976, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Dubuque, he married Pamela Miller. To this union three children were born; Angie, Nathan and Megan.
Clete began working at Sara Lee during construction in 1972 and remained there until its closing. He then worked with Sparboe foods in the same location until the time of his death. Clete was active with his church being involved in the remodeling projects, as an eucharistic minister and the Knights of Columbus. He had served on the Advisory Board at NICC in Calmar, enjoyed fishing, playing cards and Scrabble. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Pittsburgh Steelers Fan.
Clete is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam; two daughters, Angie (Dave) Dunn of Lenexa, KS and Megan Welter of New Hampton; one son, Nathan Welter of New Hampton; a grandson, Sam Dunn; his mother, Mary Welter of Epworth; two brothers, Don (Alice) Welter of Epworth and Jim (Jackie) Welter of Dubuque; two sisters, Rita (Ken) Kiefer of Rochester, MN and Jean (Terry) Theisen of Excelsior Springs, MO.
He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Welter; a sister, Sr. Nora Welter P.B.V.M.; a nephew, Eric Welter.

To the Welter family, I was shocked to read Clete’s obituary last night in the Waterloo paper. My sympathy to all. Cletus was somewhat younger than I and I have not seen him for years, but I still want you to know of my grief for your loss and that your entire family is in my thoughts today. Pam and family. I know my parents will miss Clete dearly. He was a really good friend to my dad. He really enjoyed all the years they worked together or golfed!! i think that may be one in the same i am not sure what they actually called it!! And a thank you to Clete for helping him get his job here in New Hampton after the Sara Lee plant closing and all the years he worked out of town.
