Fr. Carl was raised on a farm in the St. Lucas area. He was the fifth of eleven children born to Joseph and Anna (Blong) Schmitt. As a youth, he was involved in farming, family, education and carpentry.
A graduate of St. Luke’s High School in St. Lucas and Loras College in Dubuque, Fr. Carl also studied theology, scripture, and philosophy at Mt. St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque. After completing seminary studies, he went on to attain a M.A. in history from Notre Dame University and an M.A. in secondary administration from the University of Northern Iowa.
Fr. Carl was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Dubuque March 18, 1961. He taught several years at Don Bosco High School in Gilbertville, where he also served as associate pastor at Immaculate Conception.
Catholic Education has always been near and dear to his heart. From 1966 to 1970, Fr. Carl was the coordinator of the Dubuque Catholic Schools while also assuming duties as associate pastor of Holy Ghost. For twenty years, he was the Coordinator of the Dubuque Metropolitan System of Catholic Education. During those same twenty years, he also had the privilege of serving God’s people in other assignments. Some of his many duties included Assistant Chaplain of Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, and as Pastor at St. John ( Placid) in Epworth, St. John in Peosta, Annunciation in Lattnerville, and Holy Ghost in Dubuque.
At the Archdiocesan level, he served as Legislative Coordinator and as Administrator of the Archdiocesan Lay Teacher Insurance program. He was involved in telecommunications, and was instrumental in helping schools and parishes move into the computer age.
Over the years, Fr. Carl has been actively involved in numerous Archdiocesan activities including the Compensation Commission, the Stewardship Commission, the Priest Council, the Building Commission, the Priest Fund, the Priest Retirement Fund, and as a consultant to the Archbishop.
In 1991, Fr. Carl returned to his roots when he came to New Hampton, only a few miles from St. Lucas. Since that time, he saw many changes -first as Pastor of St. Joseph, then accepting responsibility for both Catholic Churches in New Hampton, St. Joseph and St. Mary of the Visitation. He helped to ease the transition when the two parishes merged to become Holy Family. Fr. Carl served as Pastor for the Good Shepherd Catholic Cluster in 2005 when St. Boniface in Ionia and Immaculate Conception in North Washington were added to his pastoral responsibilities. Although Fr. Carl had a full schedule as pastor of three parishes, serving nearly 1200 families, with a Catholic elementary school and a High School of Religion, he found time for an occasional game of golf and to work in his rose gardens.
After serving the New Hampton area for 19 years, Fr. Carl retired in 2010 but continued as a substitute priest in the surrounding parishes, filling in on weekends and doing spanish masses until 2022 when he became limited by his health.
He is survived by sisters, Emily Heying of Luana, IA, Elaine (Roger) Kleve of Cresco; brother, Raymond (Nancy) Schmitt of Las Vegas; sister-in-law, Debbie Schmitt of Castalia, IA; brother-in-law Albin Massman of Lansing, IA. Many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Anna (Blong) Schmitt; brothers, Tony Schmitt, Henry Schmitt, Clem Schmitt, Floyd Schmitt; sisters, Agnes (Cletus) Meyer, Verna Massman, Marie Schmitt.

My sympathy to the family. I have such wonderful memories of Father in St. Lucas as well as New Hampton. He’d always give me “the grin” when we’d bring up some of them….lol. God Bless you Father Carl.
My sympathy to Father Carl’s family. He was given the title of Monsigor Schmitt, but he preferred to be called Father.
Father Carl was in charge of all Catholic Schools for our whole diocese at one time.
He loved improving the Church grounds and school at Holy Family Church and
St. Joseph School and he was very good at that!
Plus he was a faithful servant over many years of saying Masses during Lent, extra Masses at Christmas Eve, and many more that I don’t know about.
Plus he was attentive to people who were aiming for sobriety.
May he rest in peace!

From Jim Vorderbruggen
I was a classmate of Father Carl up to the sixth grade when My folks moved to Mn. I was able to attend his ordination and first mass. After the mass everyone went up to congratulate him and to my surprise he remembered me.
At our first grade class reunion he mentioned how no one mentioned anything about encouraging their kids to a religious vocation. Two years later I wrote him a letter describing how hurt I was due to my disability to never being asked to be a mass server. I mentioned may they are not always looking in the right places for priest and nuns. I also mentioned other areas where I was really hurt by not being able to participate due to mydisability, he wtote me a letter saying he used parts of my letter in some of his sermons
My prayers and sympathy to Father’s family and all who mourn his loss. The obituary is humble like Fr. Carl. However, he not only did so many things for the parishes he served, but he did so much for all the people in the City of New Hampton and surrounding areas. I learned a lot from him and was fortunate to play a round of golf with him. He was a competitor and it was fun. May his soul rest in peace and may the angels welcome him into paradise.
Sr. Mary Diana Blong, PBVM:
Peace and prayers to the family and friends of Fr. Carl.
His roots close to the earth came to fruition as he gardened and shared his bountiful harvests with others.
We appreciated his faithfulness in coming to I.C. in Charles City for a number of his retirement years to
preside at our monthly Spanish Masses. He had a heart for immigrant families and those in need.
May he now enjoy the reward of his labors.
My deepest condolences to Father Carl’s family. He was a truly generous man and is loved by many.
Fr. Carl was such a wonderful person. My husband always enjoyed chatting with him and sharing a joke or two! He will be missed in our community.
