Charles Merle Rochford was born April 23, 1913, in Fredericksburg, IA, the son of John and Nina (Brannon) Rochford. He attended the Stapleton #6 Rural Country School and was a 1932 graduate of the Lawler High School. Merle worked as a hired hand/laborer around the Lawler area, until the time of his marriage, when they started farming.
On November 25, 1936, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, he married (Gertrude) Berniece Finnegan. To this union seven children were born. The couple began farming in the Lawler area and after eleven years moved to a farm two miles west of New Hampton. The couple retired from farming in 1975 and moved into New Hampton in 1980. Merle was a life-long farmer at heart. As with most farmers, Merle was handy tinkering with motors, and somewhat of an engineer. The couple raised their family on the farm and had enjoyed many trips to Texas as well as to Ireland. Merle and Berniece were married over 74 years at the time of her death on June 8, 2011.
Merle was a die hard Iowa Hawkeye fan, loving many sports He had a passion for gardening and loved to share his produce with family and friends. After losing his battle with glaucoma and macular degeneration he was forced to give up gardening, but still enjoyed being in the outdoors.
He had been a member of the New Hampton Golf and Country Club, the National Farmers Organization, a Dayton Township Trustee and a director for the Federal Land Bank. He was also a member of the Knights Of Columbus #1697.

Rock and Jerry, Deepest sympathies and condolences to you and your family on the loss of your dad. May your fond memories carry you through this difficult time. Craig Eckenrod
Our deepest sympathy to the entire Rochford family. How ironic that mom and Merle were neighbors on the farm and then again in the nursing home. We always enjoyed visiting with Merle when we were there to see Mom. Mom enjoyed his visits too and he was always so very kind to us and everyone else that he came in contact with. With hopes that all of your very special memories of Merle will help to ease the pain. Perhaps he and Mom are once again neighbors. Love Marcella Wurzer’s family
My deepest sympathy goes out to the entire Rochford family! May you be at peace knowing that Merle and Berniece are back together again looking out for you all! God Bless! – Lori (Finnegan) Eischeid
Rochford Family: May the peace that comes from the memories of love shared comfort you now and in the days ahead. Take comfort in knowing that Merle and Berniece are together again. Cyndy and Bob Weiglein

Our sincere condolences go out to the Rochford family. We know you will continue to embrace your many memories. Tom and Lin Finnegan
My deepest sympathy and condolences to Merle’s family at this time. He will be greatly missed by myself as well as others at NHNRC. It would bring a smile to my face every night when I would wake him by saying ‘Merle, it’s your favorite Norwegian.’ He may not have remembered my name but he knew it was time for his ‘pill’. He was a pleasure to care for and I am thankful for the opportunity to have known him. God Bless.
Our prayers and sympathy to the entire Rochford family. He was a great man and will be remembered by many. May he rest in peace. Merle & Karen Schwickerath
