Bernice Kout age 97 of Lawler passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at her home surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 25, 2025 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will follow at the church cemetery with Bernice’s grandchildren serving as pallbearers.

Family and friends may greet the family from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton.  Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church.

Bernice was born on August 27, 1928, in St. Lucas, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Julia (Reicks) Mueterthies. She grew up in St. Lucas and later moved to Lawler, where she graduated from high school in 1947.

On January 26, 1949, Bernice was united in marriage to Frank Kout. Together they farmed near Lawler until their retirement.

Bernice enjoyed gardening, sewing and quilting, cooking, and most of all, spending time with her family.

Bernice is survived by eight children, Matt (Deb) Kout of Las Vegas, NV, Elaine Prilipp of Bettendorf, IA, Diane Kout of Pleasant Prairie, WI, Ann (Butch) Lester of Ames, Leo Kout of Lawler, Dale Kout of Lawler, Janet (Tom) Samson of Ames, Bill (Julianne) Kout of Lawler; thirteen grandchildren, Kelli (Kevin) Hart, Michelle (Tim) Morrison, Christopher (Vicki) Prilipp, Anthony (Tiffany) Prilipp, Crystal (Kevin Kosierowski) Gilbert, Nicole (Aaron) Gilbert-Patin, Mark (Danielle) Lester, Greg Kout, Jordan (Ronnie) Mauzey, Ashton (Jesse) Schwickerath, Alex (Caroline) Samson, Grant (Jake Ashton) Samson, Sam (Brinna) Kout; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Delores Schluetter; sister-in-law, Joan Mueterthies; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; parents-in-law; husband Frank Kout in 1990; son-in-law Lloyd Prilipp, brothers, Clarence (Madonna) Mueterthies, Alfred Mueterthies, Leon (Goldie) Mueterthies; in-laws, Dale Schluetter, John (Helen) Kout.

The Kout family would like to thank Visiting Angels in Ames and St. Croix Hospice Staff for all they did for Bernice.
