Adrian “Skeeter” Skoda, age 79 of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at Holy Family Parish-St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Msgr. Carl Schmitt celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and children. Michelle Chipera and Eileen Huffman will be the lectors. The offertory gifts will be presented by Alvin and Shirley Skoda, Anna Mae & Sonny Christiansen and Mary Skoda. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Military Honors by the New Hampton American Legion and VFW Posts. Pallbearers are Todd Skoda, Shawn Huffman, Ryan Flynn, Chris Olson, Andy Aries, Brian Voves, Dan Chipera and Ryan McGovern. Honorary pallbearers are Michelle Chipera, Jenny Voves, Erin Fettkether, Allison Vaala, Eileen Huffman, Stacie McGovern, Sarah Aries, Bobbi Skoda, Pete Willadsen, Gary Wegner, Derwin Robinson, Steve Orr, Bill Harris, Hoop Burgart, Dale Gates, Kenny Lester, Duane Nelson, Russ Springmier and Charlie Orvis. Friends may call 2:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home, New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Rosary and a 5:00 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at church on Monday. Adrian “Skeeter” Skoda was born March 19, 1929, near Lawler, IA, the son of Louis and Eleanor (Busta) Skoda. At an early age the Skoda family moved near Cresco where he received his education at Assumption Catholic School. He was inducted into the United States Navy on June 20, 1946, and was honorably discharged on April 20, 1948. He then completed high school, graduating in 1948. On May 20, 1950, at Assumption Catholic Church in Cresco, he married Maxine Groesbeck. To this union five children were born. Adrian was initially a part owner of the Cresco Bowling Center and in 1957 purchased the New Hampton Bowling Center located in downtown New Hampton. In 1968, he built the current Bowlaway Lanes in New Hampton. He was a former State President and State Director of the Iowa Bowling Proprietors Association and had been inducted into the Iowa State Bowling Hall of Fame. Skeeter was an avid Hawkeye Fan. He enjoyed woodworking, winters in Florida with Maxine, golfing, camping, BINGO, stamp and coin collecting and playing cards, but most importantly time with his entire family. Survivors include his wife, Maxine; two sons, Dale (Cathy) Skoda and Tony Skoda all of New Hampton; three daughters, Sue (Dan) Huffman of New Hampton, Jo (Randy) Vaala of Lawler and Carol (Rod) Olson of Ocala, FL; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Alvin (Shirley) Skoda of Cresco; one sister, Anna Mae (Sonny) Christiansen of Cresco; a sister-in-law, Mary Skoda of Cresco. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arnold Skoda.

  1. I just learned of Skeeter’s passing. I haven’t seen him in many years, but I have to tell you that some of my fondest memories involve playing for the Bowlaway Lanes softball team. Skeeter was a very generous sponsor who would allow us to play in tournaments almost every weekend and then entertain us at the bowling alley when we got home. Thanks Skeeter, you will be missed.

  2. Our thoughts are prayers are with the entire Skoda family at this time. ( It has been many years since we sat around a campfire-burning bowling pins at KOA near Cresco, but we always remember the fun we had with Tony and your family.)

I remember back in the early ’70’s, Skeeter entered a bunch of sandbaggers from New Hampton who won a local tournament, to bowl against a pro team representing Hamms out of Minnesota.   13. My sincere condolences at the passing of ‘Skeeter’. I remember back in the mid ’60s when Skeeter and dad tried to teach me to bowl. Although I live in Southeast Alaska, I still get online to read the New Hampton Tribune on line edition. I was real sorry to read of his passing.
