We will hold a brief service for both Bill and Lola followed by some storytelling and picture sharing at the Super 8 Motel following.
Bill Gilbert was a Korean War Veteran and received the Purple Heart in 1952 after the loss of his leg. Bill taught at Columbus High School in Waterloo for almost 30 years. Past students will still remember Bill’s many classroom antics, especially the protractor in the leg trick. Bill loved food, antiques, road trips to nowhere and never met a stranger in his many travels throughout Iowa.
Lola Gilbert was a loving mother and wife who lived independently until just prior to her recent death. Lola was an avid reader, loved art, never met a crossword puzzle she couldn’t whip and appreciated the company of her grand-dogs from Kansas City. Many will remember Lola for her direct and honest observations on life and those around her.
Both Bill and Lola attended New Hampton High School and grew up in New Hampton.
They are survived by two sons, Jim and Eric and three grandchildren. Lola is survived by her two sisters and one brother.
I remember going with Eric and Bill to an antique sale or two when Eric and I were living in Ames. There was not a person anywhere that Bill would not talk to. I learned a few thoings about selling to people from him that have served me to this day. I still remember meeting Lola for the first time, she was berating Eric for something, like showing up too late or why she just wouldnt move out of that little house. she was definitely her own person, and dont tell her different! I am sorry for your loss and wish I could have made it to the service. I am glad she could be with Eric before she died and remembering how Bill was found at his passing, he was doing what he loved, driving his caddillac wherever it would take him and picking up this and that whereever he went.
Bill was my dad’s(Charlie) brother, and Bill & Lola were my godparents. I have great memories of them growing up. They always came to visit us in New Hampton, especially after my dad died. I remember lots of tricks with the wooden leg, and Lola’s great sense of humor and laugh.
