His family moved to Nashua, where Bill was a lifelong resident. He attended Nashua Public Schools. On June 16, 1966, Bill was united in marriage to Alma Bartley in Covington, VA. He was employed at Trowbridge Grocery Store in Charles City, which was later known as the Red Owl, for over twenty years. He was employed by Harvestore in Nashua for a short time, before finding a new home at AMPI in Fredericksburg. Bill worked at AMPI for around ten years until his retirement in 1994. Bill especially loved spending time outdoors where he could often be found gardening. The family often joked that Bill was a ‘cookie-monster,’ and could be caught eating one of Alma’s cookies and sleeping in his chair at the same time. He was very proud of his grandchildren, and will be remembered by his family for his loving and caring ways. Bill is survived by his wife of 43 years, Alma; five sons, Patrick (Linda) McCarthy of Cotter AK, John (Wanda) McCarthy of Waynesboro, VA, Mike (Margy) McCarthy of Yuma, AZ, Richard (Mia) McCarthy of Converse, TX, and Steve McCarthy of Ankeny, IA; six grandchildren, Anthony and Evelyn McCarthy, Michael and Madeline McCarthy, Chelsey and Azlyn McCarthy. Guestbook

  1. Our deepest sympathy to all following the passing of ‘UNCLE’ Bill.He was a great man and will be soreley missed.

  2. I’m very sorry for your loss of Bill. Some of my fondest childhood memories are going to Trowbridges and visiting my Grandma. The memory is a little cloudy, but it seemed like Bill was always there. And that he was really nice. Also, he always made me feel welcome when hanging out with Steve. What a lovely man. Sincerely, Mark

  3. Please accept our heartfelt sympathies. We first knew Bill going back to the days at Trowbridges. He was always ‘johnny on the spot’ to help with the groceries. He was a good man.
