Dr. Wayne C. Sander, D.V.M., 91 yrs. of age.

Dr. Sander passed away peacefully at his home from Parkinson’s under the wonderful care of St. Croix Hospice on May 15, 2026. His wife, son & daughter, and two (nurses) granddaughters helped this past month with his care.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2026 at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton with Rev. Dan Christensen presiding.  Interment will take place at a later date.

Friends may greet the family from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton.  Visitation continues an hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Wayne was born February 10, 1935, the son of Walter & Amanda Sander at Luana, IA. He graduated from Luana High in 1952. He graduated from Iowa State University (ISU) and received his veterinary license in May 1958.

Dr. Sander worked for Monona Veterinary Clinic for 16 months before moving to New Hampton, IA on September 30, 1959. He owned & worked for the original New Hampton Veterinary Clinic for 40 years. He worked with Dr. A.T. Olson & Dr. Steve Lukes.

Wayne met the love of his life, a Postville teacher, and married Jean (Andersen) Sander on June 14, 1959. They are the parents of three children: Keely (Don) Mueterthies, Lawler; Karl (Tori) Sander of Panama; & Kevin Sander, Minburn, IA.

They have seven grandchildren & spouses: Bryan (Michelle) Mueterthies, Jason (Heidi) Mueterthies, Emily (Matthew) Stokes, Jeremy (Megan) Mueterthies, Amanda (Jim) King, Wayne (Isa) Sander, AZ; Grant (Jana) Sander, IN.

They have twenty great-grandchildren: Jadeyn, Shelby, Alexa, Raela, Walker, Cullen, Chet, Colt, Cece Mueterthies; Addy, Sadie & Aubrey Stokes; Lilly, Jack, Clara & Spencer King; Luca, Cade, Gage, & Sloane Sander.

Wayne has four sisters-in-law: Evy Turk, Waukee, IA; Kay Krueger, Primghar, IA; Leah Peters; and Betty (Daryl) Bentson, Omaha, NE; and many loving nieces & nephews.

Wayne played golf all his adult life. He had four “holes in one,” two at the New Hampton Golf & Country Club and two at Florence Gardens Golf Course in Florence, AZ, where he & Jean spent 23 winters. He played in 17 senior golf tournaments in Northeast Iowa in 1999, the summer he retired.

Wayne was also an outstanding outdoorsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and trapping. He shot a trophy deer buck on December  3, 1967 while hunting with his father-in-law, Manuel Andersen, in Shelby County, IA. Wayne also shot three mallard ducks with one shot in fall of 1970 in Chickasaw County.

He will be remembered as gentle, soft spoken & mannered, pet lover, avid card player – his favorite was Tenpoint pitch, playing weekly at his daughter’s gathering. He was a loving husband, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Walter & Amanda Sander; parents-in-law, Manuel & Velmo Andersen, Audubon, IA; sister Irene (Leonard) Wiedeman; and brother Willard (Beverly) Sander.

  7. Our condolences to the Sander family. Our fond memory–Wayne was a golfer and a member of a senior group who frequented tournaments in NE Iowa, challenging each other for the best score and earned tournament proceeds. May the family also cherish their fond memories.

  8. I am sorry to hear of Wayne’s death. My sincere sympathy to Jean and all of their family. My mom and dad (Ann & Bud Rose) were longtime friends and would share their condolences as well if they were not greeting him in heaven. I remember them sharing adventures and fun they had with Wayne and Jean. Wayne “rescued” me one night when I returned home to find our dog not able to stand up. No one else home and it was 11:00 PM. He came over and helped me by taking him to his clinic. I was forever grateful at age 17 for knowing this special veterinary.
    I think my mom and Wayne knew each other from attending school or living around Postville. Such good friends for decades.
