Thomas “Tom” Gerald Tierney age 84 of New Hampton, IA, died Wednesday, July 22, 2026, at Mayo Clinic Hospital, Methodist Campus in Rochester, MN.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at Holy Family Parish, New Hampton, with Rev. Chris Podhajsky celebrating the Mass. Inurnment will be held at Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton.

Friends are invited to greet the family from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. Monday, July 27, 2026, at Hugeback – Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton, where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Rosary and a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Service. Visitation continues one hour before the Memorial Mass at the church on Tuesday.

Thomas “Tom” Gerald Tierney, age 84, of New Hampton, Iowa, passed away on July 22, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family and the many memories he helped create throughout his life.

Tom was born on June 13, 1942, to Roy and Catherine (Franzen) Tierney. He grew up in the New Hampton area, where he developed the strong work ethic, kindness, and devotion to family that would guide him throughout his life. Those who knew Tom will remember his gentle spirit, friendly nature, and willingness to lend a helping hand whenever it was needed. His steady presence, warm heart, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged, a service that reflected his sense of duty and commitment. After returning home, he built a life centered on family, work, and community. He met Judy Troyna at a dance in Chip’s Ballroom in Lawler, Iowa, a memory that would become the beginning of a lifelong love story. Tom and Judy were married on September 17, 1966, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia, and together they shared a devoted marriage filled with love, laughter, and partnership.

Tom worked at Oliver and White Farm for over twenty years, where he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. He later drove truck for David Kurk and spent many years hauling raw materials until his retirement in 2007. Even after retiring, Tom continued to stay active by working for the Coop and driving the Chickasaw Chassis. He took pride in an honest day’s work and in doing whatever needed to be done, always with a calm and capable spirit.

In his quieter moments, Tom found joy in playing cards and sitting on the front porch, where he enjoyed the simple pleasure of friends and family gathering around him to talk about anything and everything. Those moments reflected the heart of who he was. He valued companionship, conversation, and the comfort of being surrounded by the people he loved. His porch was more than a place to sit. It was a place where memories were made, stories were shared, and everyone felt at home.

Tom will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering willingness to help those he loved. He lived a life defined by loyalty, devotion, and quiet strength, always putting family and friends before himself. Whether through a thoughtful gesture, a helping hand, or a well-timed joke, Tom had a way of making people feel cared for and valued. His warm presence, steady support, and genuine love touched the lives of so many, and those memories will be treasured forever by all who knew him.

His legacy lives on in the family he raised, the work he completed, and the countless lives he touched along the way. Though he will be deeply missed, Tom’s memory will continue to bring comfort and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know him.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Tierney of New Hampton, IA; two sons, Kevin (Wanda) Tierney of Charles City, IA, and Mike (Amanda Mallinger) Tierney of Des Moines, IA; one daughter, Jada (Lori McFarland) Tierney of Waterloo, Iowa; brother, Jim (Georgia) Tierney of Waterloo, IA; sister, Betty (Gerald) Gleason of Waterloo, IA; his grandchildren, Julia Hanson, Rory (Jessica) Tierney, Rebecca (Wyatt) Hambly, and Ian Tierney; and his great-grandchildren, Patrick and Quincy Tierney.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents; his grandson, Isaiah Tierney; his brothers, Francis Franzen and Joseph “Arnie” Tierney; and his sister, Teresa Anderson. Though he was deeply loved by many, those who went before him surely welcomed him with open arms.
