He was a graduate of the Sante Fe Springs High School and then enlisted in the United States Navy. He received an Honorable Discharge. The family moved to Iowa in 2007 and Thomas was very active in the local veteran programs with his therapy dog. He had been the Exalted Ruler of the local Elks Club #418.
Survivors include his parents, Linda (Ed) Poliak of Cedar Falls, IA; one brother, Scott (Michelle) Poliak of Fairchild, WI; four sisters, Katherine Curlee of Waverly, IA, Diane Poliak of Loma Linda, CA, Darlene (Cayle) Yant of Waverly; Theresa (Tony) Promer of Cedar Falls. He was preceded in death by his father and grandmother, Marian Daugherty.
When I was editor of the 11th Hour, I met Tommy at the Fall Iowa State Elk’s Convention in 2014. He was enthusiastic and introduced me to Buddy, the therapy dog. He sent me a short story and pictures of Buddy, brightening the mood of many elderly veterans or people who were shut in in assisted living homes. I am surprised to see that Thomas had passed away, as I just saw him at the 2015 Fall convention and he appeared very healthy. I am shocked at this loss– he will definitely be missed– I miss him, even though we only met briefly… he left that indelible of an impression on me. God bless you Tommy and may God bless your family with love and strength… comfort that He has embraced Tommy in His loving kingdom! J. Scott Haberer/ Sioux City, Elk’s Lodge 112

I am very proud to have known Tommy and call him a friend. It was always a pleasure to see him and Buddy. The passion he held for our Veterans is without equal. Rest in peace Brother Sosack.
My memory of Tommy is from the year that I was State President of the Iowa Elks Assoc. I had decided that I would honor an Elk that exemplified my moto ‘Make A Difference’. My choice was Tommy and Buddy. Together they ‘Made A Difference’ to our veterans as well as to their lodge. I presented him with an Elks watch which he wore proudly and an Elks vest for Buddy. Through all of his personal challenges he continued to Make A Difference in others lives. Tommy you Made A Difference and will be missed. Rest in Peace my brother.
