Therin was born on Feb. 29, 1968, to Merlin and Mary Kay "Mike" (Belden) Rentscher. He grew up in Elkader, Iowa. Therin received his education at Central Elkader Community Schools. In high school, he was active in football, wrestling, and track. He graduated with the class of 1986. After high school, he graduated from Upper Iowa University. After college, Therin built a long and successful career in manufacturing. In high school, he began dating Kim Polkow and the two were married on November 3, 1990, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Elkader. The couple lived in Cedar Rapids before moving to New Hampton, where they lived for more than 20 years until they moved to Fredericksburg in 2020. Therin and Kim have three children — Jenna, Tanner and Tyler — and as Jenna will tell you, “he did everything for us, and I mean everything.” He was immensely proud of his three kids who meant the world to him. Therin loved being a part of their lives, attending their school activities, coaching his sons in different sports and helping them through life. He was a longtime coach, starting his career as an assistant football coach at North Fayette High School. Therin also served as a basketball coach for the St. Joe’s Panthers in New Hampton, was a middle school football coach at New Hampton, and was an assistant coach for a very successful New Hampton boys basketball program for seven years. He also coached numerous youth sports teams. Therin’s coaching philosophy was geared around two mantras. First, there was a time to be serious and a time to have fun. Second, everyone on the team was important. He cared just as much for the last guy on the bench as he did for the superstars. He had high expectations for all of his players, but he was the kind of coach who found success not on the scoreboard, but in seeing players bust their butts for their teams on the court and the gridiron. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and he loved his dogs, especially the labs that he spent many hunting and fishing trips with. Therin was a fan of Iowa Hawkeyes football, Iowa State basketball and NASCAR, especially the late Dale Earnhardt. Therin was a fun guy to be around — be it at family gatherings, cracking jokes while he served as a statistician along the sidelines at football games or playing “Pitch” and hanging out with “the guys” at various tournaments and camps the teams he helped coach attended. He will be dearly missed by all those that knew him, especially his wife of 32 years and his three children, and the world just won’t be the same without him. Therin is survived by his wife, Kim of Fredericksburg, IA; one daughter, Jenna (Ryan Westemeyer) Rentschler of Waukee, IA; two sons, Tanner (Marisa Flick) Rentschler of New Hampton, IA, Tyler Rentschler of Fredericksburg, IA; mother, Mike Rentschler of Elkader, IA, mother and father-in-law, Keith and Theresa Polkow of Fredericksburg, IA, one brother, Travis (Kara) Rentschler of Marion, IA; brothers-in-law Matt Haight of Columbia, MO, Kevin Polkow of Raleigh, NC, Kent (Sara) Polkow of Southern Pines, NC, Craig Polkow of Fort Myers, FL; nephews, Alec Rentschler, Parker and Spencer Haight, Carson Polkow; nieces, Madison and Kennedy Rentschler, Lauren and Allison Polkow; his beloved dogs, Tytan, Hazel, Emmy. He was preceded in death by his father Merlin in 2003; one sister-in-law, Jennifer Polkow- Haight in 2021. In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the family.

  10. We gather here, a class once more To reminiscence, like years before Upon the days and joys we knew Before our school-aged time was through Yet, as we meet, with memories near We think of those, always held dear – Our friends and classmates, passed away To be with God, every school day. They sit at desks, resting on clouds Surrounded by angelic crowds Where they shall be forevermore The friends and schoolmates we adore They’ll be with us in every prayer Until the day, we join them there Within the walls of Heaven’s class Where friendships formed shall always last. Until that hour, we join again An empty chair, we will maintain In honor of the life-long bond We forged with those, now passed beyond The friends with whom we learned life’s truth Whose bonds lasted far from our youth And shall remain forever near When we gather, year after year. © 2006 – Jill Eisnaugle’s Poetry Collection
