I am so sorry to hear about cousin Steve – I remember many good times as children go to Duane and Mary’s and also going to Grandpa and Grandma Abben’s in Cedar Rapids. May God bless you all through these difficult days, and God bless Steve’s memory.
Steven Wade Abben
October 1, 1956 ~ July 10, 2026
Steven “Steve” Wade Abben, age 69, of Osage, IA passed away unexpectedly on Friday July 10th , 2026 at his home in Osage.
A celebration of life will be held on July 17th 5pm-8pm at the Osage Fire Department.
Steve was born October 1st , 1956 in Cedar Rapids, IA to Mary (Bower) and Duane Abben.
Steve began his education in Riceville. Later, he and family moved to Marion. They then moved back where he completed his education graduating from Osage high school in 1974.
On October 26th, 1974 Steve married Linda Gerbig. Together they welcomed their 3 children, Jennifer, Jim, and Jamie. They later divorced.
On August 18th, 1989, Steve met the love of his life Dell Schwab. They were united in marriage on April 21st, 1990. Steve then gained two more children, Peter and Kristy. They completed their family later when they added another child, Matthew.
Steve was an avid fisherman, golfer, and bowler. He would often go with family and friends to Lake of the Woods. He also loved taking his grandkids fishing at Lake Hendricks, teaching them how to fish. (Boy, could he tell a good fish story). During the winter months, you would find him in the bowling alley. He earned multiple 300 rings to show for his bowling accomplishments. On the golf course, he gained bragging rights for 2 hole-in-ones. He also enjoyed his time singing in the church choir.
Steve was a member of the Osage Fire Department for 21 years. He was known for running the pumper during fire calls. After retiring from the department, he enjoyed driving bus for Osage Community School. He gained many relationships with the students and families throughout the years. He also enjoyed coaching the Osage Trap Team.
Steve loved watching his children and grandchildren play sports. His love of the outdoors brought him to mowing many properties. When relaxing at home, you would find him watching sports. He especially loved cheering on the Hawkeyes, Twins, Vikings, and Indiana Fever.
Steve is survived by his beloved wife Dell Abben. Also survived by daughter Jennifer (Rick) Dunn, grandchild Derrick (Fiancé Josie) Dunn, grandchild Rylie (Tyler) Leerar, great grandchild Kayson Leerar, son, Jim (Nikki) Abben, grandchild Hailee Abben, Zacharee “Zach” Abben, Averee Abben (Calli O’Neil” bonus great grandchild Kolton O’Neil),. daughter Jamie (Chris) Cotton. granddaughter Bradlee (Justice) Wahid-Cotton, great grandchild Clyde Wahid-Cotton, granddaughter Bailee (Ron) Reeves, granddaughter Mikayla Brown, Son Matthew Abben, Daughter Kristy Borchardt (Mikey Flaten), granddaughter Brittney Jung, grandson Lucus Provin, great granddaughter Zoe Provin, son Peter Borchardt, granddaughters Leya and Harmony Borchardt. Sisters Cindy Abben, Tori Abben, Deb (Rod) Reid. nephew Brandon Abben (Tabby) great nephews Cole & Brady Abben, aunt Dorothy Caldwell, sister in-law Karen Moore, nieces Abby (Dan) Leuther , Hillary (Bill) Moore, nephews Tim Coonradt, Marc Coonradt and many cousins.
Steve is preceded in death by his parents Duane and Mary Abben. Parent in-laws John and Hyllis Schwab, grandparents John and Ethel Bower, Ben and Bena Abben, sister in-law Peg (Dave) Harris brother in-law Terry Moore
