Steve was born on Aug. 5, 1959, to Ray and Judith Ann (Bolam) Becthold in Waverly. His family first lived in Plainfield but moved to Ionia when he was 3 years old.
He began his education in the New Hampton school system, and even at a young age, he loved to pull pranks on people. There was the time when he was in elementary school when he came to school the day after a school board election and told his teacher, “I don’t have to do anything today because my dad was elected to the School Board yesterday,” a story that to this day makes his family laugh.
The Bectholds would later live in Nevada and Grundy Center, and Steve was a member of the Class of 1977 at South Hamilton High School in Jewell. As a youngster, he fell in love with cars. As his dad puts it, he loved to look at them, drive them, “mechanic on them,” and tear them apart and put them back together.
After graduating from high school, Steve attended Lincoln Tech for a short time to learn more about auto mechanics, and he spent his entire adult life working as a mechanic. He spent a number of years working for a firm in Ames that specialized in construction equipment, and during the construction season, he often spent 70 hours a week in the shop making sure the equipment was ready to hit the road.
Steve had a son and a grandson, and the best way to sum him up is he was a “people person.” He was a hard worker, but he loved spending time with his family and going to “get-togethers.” He was also the kind of guy who would help anyone. If you were broke down on the side of the road, Steve was going to stop and help you out no matter if he knew you or you were a perfect stranger because it was the way he was brought up.
In recent years, Steve had battled complications because of his diabetes, but he never lost that ability to fix any mechanical problem or his penchant for being a “Good Samaritan.”
Steven is survived by his father, Ray (Janice) Becthold of Allison, IA; one son, Beau (Amanda) Becthold of Texas; one grandson, Jack Becthold of Texas; three brothers Jeff (Glenda) Becthold of St. James, MN; Brian Becthold of Nashua, IA, Mike (Jenny) Becthold of Cedar Rapids, IA; one sister, Teresa Mehmen of Nashua, IA, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Judith Becthold in 2005; one brother-in-law, Steven Mehmen in 2019.
