Born on August 31, 1953, in New Hampton, Iowa, to Robert and Jane (Snyder) Manges, Steven’s life was a testament to the joy and camaraderie that music and love can bring into our lives.
Steven’s journey began in the small town of New Hampton, where he attended the local high school, graduating with a class that would remember him for his friendly demeanor and spirited nature. His love for music blossomed early, and it was this passion that would define much of his life. After high school, Steven channeled his talents into a successful career as an Auto Technician at Witham Auto in Waterloo, dedicating over 30 years of service where he was not only a skilled technician but also a cherished colleague.
It was in 1992, amidst the chords and melodies of a concert in Clermont, that Steven’s heart found its match in Deb McChane. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in a beautiful wedding on August 13, 1993, at the Methodist Church in Waterloo. Together, they built a life filled with harmony and happiness in Waterloo for 30 years, their love growing stronger with each passing day.
Steven’s dedication to his craft extended beyond his work at the auto shop. His passion for music never waned as he played in a band throughout his adult life. His talent and commitment to the Iowa music scene were recognized when he was inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—an honor that spoke volumes about his influence and the joy he brought to audiences.
When he wasn’t under the hood of a car or on stage with his guitar, Steven could be found cheering for his favorite sports teams—the NASCAR drivers, the Minnesota Vikings, and the Indiana Fever—or immersed in the world of old Westerns, which he adored. His loyal dog, Xena, was often by his side as they enjoyed the simple pleasure of watching TV together.
Above all, Steven cherished his role as a grandfather. The sparkle in his eye when he spoke of his grandchildren was evidence of the deep love and pride he felt. Steven was also a romantic at heart, known for surprising Deb with roses hundreds of times over their 30 years together—a true testament to his loving spirit.
Those who knew Steven will remember him as a man who lived with his whole heart. He was loving and friendly, with a spirited personality that could light up a room. His laughter was infectious, and his ability to connect with people through his music and kindness was a gift to all who crossed his path.
Steven is survived by his wife Deb (McChane) Manges of Waterloo; sons: Troy (Harat) Manges of Terrell, TX, Jeremy (Marcia) Treichel of Clive, IA, Shawn (Krissy) Treichel of Booneville, IN, and Cody Dewater of Cedar Rapids, IA; daughters: Tonya (Ben) Collins of Blue Earth, MN, Karisa (Matthew) Renner of Waterloo, and Jennifer (Tim) Newell of Cedar Falls, IA; grandchildren: Dillon, Austin, Jaryd, Christian, Samantha, Abbi, Tyler, Riley, Brayden, Kaden, Jaxton, Jazlyn, Anakin, Liliah, Journey, Gage, Deona, and Charlie; great-grandchildren: Peyton, Hazel, Dillon, and another expected in February.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Jane (Snyder) Manges.
