Shirley Mae Goddard, a cherished soul known for her adventurous spirit and boundless kindness, passed away peacefully on October 23, 2024, in Nora Springs, IA, surrounded by the love of her family. Born on April 2, 1945, in Osage, IA, Shirley’s life was a testament to her enduring passion and dedication to her loved ones.

Shirley graduated from Osage High School in the class of 1963. Later that same year she met and married Morris Goddard.  She went on to serve the Nashua Public School System for 28 years. Her role within the school system was more than a job; it was an extension of her caring nature, as she relished in the daily interactions with school children, nurturing their growth with her ever-present smile and support.

Her life was rich with interests that kept her joyous and active. An avid fisherwoman, Shirley could often be found by the lake, waiting patiently for the next catch. Bingo nights were a source of excitement and camaraderie, while games of marbles and cards with friends and family showcased her competitive yet always fair play. A fan of television, she never missed an episode of NCIS, indulging in the twists and turns of each case.

Shirley’s love for adventure found its expression in camping and traveling, especially when shared with her family. The journeys she embarked on with her loved ones were filled with laughter, discovery, and the creation of unforgettable memories. Yet, it was the simple act of being with her family that she cherished most. Attending events, caring for her family members, and just spending time with them were the moments she held dear.

Shirley’s family was indeed her pride and joy. She is survived by her loving children, Randy (Colleen) Goddard of Urbandale, IA, Sheila (Rod) Hanawalt of Ionia, IA, Shelly (David) Moore of Iowa Falls, IA, Lori (Jim) Hansen of Carville, IA, and Shawn (Colleen) Goddard of Charles City, IA. Her legacy continues through her eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her spirit of love and generosity. Her sisters, Rose (Jeff) Smith of Nashua, IA, and Sandy Clausen of Rochester, MN; and her brothers-in-law, Kei Wei of Columbus, OH, Stan Goddard of Charles City, IA, and Benny (Shirley) Goddard of Charles City, IA. Each family member held a special place in her heart, and she cherished the bonds they shared.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents Herman and Evelyn Rekow, her beloved husband, Morris, in 2019, her sisters, Phyllis Wei and Mildred Rekow, her brothers-in-law, Jerry Clausen and Marvin Goddard, and her sisters-in-law, Eleanor Goddard and Verna Goddard. The memories they created together remain a comfort to all who knew Shirley and her family.
