Shirley Ione Hermann was born March 17, 1928 in Walker, IA. While growing up her family moved to several towns and finally settled in Charles City, IA where Shirley graduated high school. She met Charles Andrew Hansen while he attended college and they married on December 22, 1947. They moved to New Hampton in 1957 and purchased what would become Hansen’s Furniture. It is here that they raised their three children.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother above all else. But her gifts did not stop there.
She was an artist, and shared her talent through oil painting, watercolors, cake decorating, macramé, created Ridiculous Day costumes and church banners, pottery, ceramics, designing retail storefronts, and crafts in general. Every Christmas she’d create a handmade ornament for sale at the church bazaar.
She was a leader, taking her turn heading the local PEO chapter, church women’s organization and girl scouts as well as sitting on the Board of the Little House of Bargains. When not in a leadership role she was an active participant in the Loafers organization and Rag Pickers.
She loved music; played piano and violin, sang in the church choir, and attended many concerts from symphony orchestras to operas and hometown band concerts.
With a great love of travel, Shirley planned all the family road trips and enjoyed many adventures from Hawaii to the Grand Canyon. She continued to travel with her sister Mardella after Charles’ passing in 1988.
She was generous with her time and talent, had a strong faith in God, and possessed an unquenchable positive outlook on life.
Shirley is survived by daughter Mary (Jerry) Johnson, son William (Deb), and daughter Barb (John) Goin, granddaughter Sarah (Drew) Beals, grandson Andrew (Lindsay) Johnson, and her precious great grandkids, Sydney and Tyler; Silvia Cogo, her special Brazilian “daughter”, who remained in close touch since her visit in 1974
She was preceded in death by husband Charles Hansen, sister Mardella Hermann, parents Norval and Myrtle Hermann. .
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be directed to First United Methodist Church of New Hampton IA.

Well Bill and Barb and Shirley’s old next door neighbors, the Cheney kids, will never forget how she made that really sweet Kool-aid for hot summer days. Then even better, she would sometimes freeze the Kool-aid into those great homemade popsicles! She would also fill the little inflatable swimming pool in the early morning so the sun could warm it up for all of us to “swim” in, in the afternoon. She also got Mr. Hackman to build that great treehouse in the back! Also on Saturday afternoons during winter, we’d get invited over to play and dance to that real jukebox in the Hansens’ basement. And I still have the little ceramic casserole that she brought over as a wedding present! You all had a such a nice and gifted mother–may all of your memories keep her forever close!
Our thoughts are with each of you.
Every time we entered our Johnson family home, we enjoyed a piece of Shirley’s art hanging on the wall. How very special that we now see her artistic genes in Sarah’s beautiful lace gowns. It’s wonderful she was able to enjoy Andy’s children, Sydney and Tyler who will also share in everyone’s cherished memories of Shirley.
Blessings to each of you,
Thom, Mike, Brent,
