Sally Lee Bast was born July 23, 1932, in West Branch, IA, the daughter of Rex and Martha (Petersen) Johnson. She received her education in Janesville, IA, graduating in 1950. In 1946, she met Clifford A. Bast and fell in love with him the moment she met him. The couple was united in marriage on June 10, 1950, in Cedar Rapids, IA.
Sally enjoyed spending time with her family. Her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life. It didn’t matter if that time was spent playing games, enjoying being outdoors or simply sitting and visiting. Sally never forgot a special occasion or someone’s favorite food or special treats. Her family is going to miss all the special notes and greeting cards they received in the mail.
Sally is survived by her husband, Cliff, her children, Cathleen Rain of Preston, MN; Craig (LaDonna) Bast of Greeley, CO; Richard (Cindy) Bast of Nashua; Ronald Bast (special friend Melinda) of Wykoff, MN; Jeanine (Bill) Hodge of Hampton, IA; eighteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Makins of Little Rock, AR; and special friends, Kory and Missy Dammeier and their three children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Patricia and Janita and one brother, James.
Sally was my first boss at Hy-Vee in Charles City in the deli. All of us who knew her would say the same thing. She was a true class act. Kind, funny, smart a real people person. Cliff, I am so sorry as I know you and Sally had one of the greatest relationships I have ever seen. I am so sorry for your loss…she was a gem!

Sally..thanks for so much that you’ve done for me in life..I should have told you how much I aprecheated all you did while I was growing up..I wasn’t your grandson but you treated me like one..I remember being young and when ever I stayed home sick you and Cliff would come over and check on me and bring me something you didn’t have to but you always did and that ment allot, and as I grew older and stubborn I never showed you thanks. I’m sorry, and Thank You!
