Russell Ambrose Weigel was born December 7, 1929, on the Weigel family farm near Jerico, IA, the son of Irwin V. and Ellen M. (Fitzgerald) Weigel. He received his education at the Meadowland country school near Jerico. Russell enjoyed doing chores and helping on the family farm until his father died in 1965, at which time he remained living with his mother until moving into New Hampton in 1971. Following the death of his mother, Russ remained at home for a few more years until becoming a resident at The Heritage Residence in New Hampton. Due to declining heath he moved to the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in 1999. In his younger years, he enjoyed going to dances in Lawler and on shopping trips with the staff and residents of the Heritage. Russell’s large family made for many get-togethers that he enjoyed going to.
Survivors include two brothers, Bill (Marlene) Weigel of New Hampton, Jim (Sharon) Weigel of Charles City; one brother-in-law, Ray Schwickerath of Fredericksburg; one sister-in-law, Doris Weigel of Cedar Falls; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Vivian Heiselman, Marie Schwickerath and Virginia Schwickerath; one brother, John “Jack” Weigel.

I did not know Russell personally, but my mother (Mary Eileen Weigel Anderson) always spoke fondly of him… My sympathies to the Weigel family. Deanna Anderson
While I remember Russ as being quiet and shy, his legacy is so much more than that. A spirit of kindness and simplicity and a smile that shared a thousand words. Sometimes those that make the greatest impact are those that embody the qualities Russell possessed. Wishing him comfort and peace as he enters God’s kingdom. Angie and Jarrett Haskovec
Russell was always so polite and quiet and had a fun sense of humor. He was a joy to know.
We are so sorry for your loss. Russell was a great and kind man. We will all miss him. Heritage Residence Staff
