Roger J. 'Jim' McFarland age 85 of Fredericksburg died Sunday morning, October 31, 2010, at the New Hampton Care Center.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 3, 2010, at the United Methodist Church in Fredericksburg with Pastor Shirley Will officiating. Donn Cook will be the organist and vocalist accompanying the congregation singing, 'The Lord's Prayer' and 'You Raide Me Up'.
Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg with full military honors by Amvets Post #90. Nathaniel McFarland, Rochelle McFarland, Alexandra McFarland, Donn Cook, Hugh Mackintosh and Ken Harada will be casketbearers.
Friends may greet the family after 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the church. Hugeback and Chenoweth Funeral Home, Fredericksburg is in charge of the arrangements.
Roger “Jim” McFarland was born June 29, 1925, on the family farm near Fredericksburg, the son of Douglas and Elsie (Byer) McFarland. He received his education in Fredericksburg. He was inducted into the United States Navy on October 15, 1943 and was honorably discharged on June 22, 1946. On August 6, 1953, at the United Methodist Church Parsonage in Fredericksburg, he married Ethelyn J. Cook.
Jim owned Jim’s Tavern in Fredericksburg for many years and then worked several places in sales including Farm Bureau Insurance. He later drove milk truck and then worked for Titus Manufacturing in Waterloo. Jim the retired from the Chickasaw County Secondary Roads in 1987. Jim and Ethelyn enjoyed dancing around northeast Iowa, golfing, fishing, traveling and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The couple enjoyed watching “The Price Is Right.” Jim appeared as a contestant on the show and won a brand new car.
Survivors include one son, Bob (Cynthia) McFarland of Cedar Rapids; one daughter, Barbara Fenton of Urbandale; three grandchildren, Rochelle, Nathaniel and Alexandra McFarland of Cedar Rapids; one sister, JoAnn Stong of San Jose, CA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on December 11, 2009; one brother, Clark McFarland and a son-in-law, Ray Fenton.
