Robert “Bob” Kriener age 77 of Brooklyn, IA died Tuesday, September 17, 2024 at UnityPoint Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, NOVEMBER 27, 2024 at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church in Fort Atkinson with Rev. Nick Radloff celebrating the Mass. Interment will follow at St. Boniface Cemetery in Ionia.

Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday, NOVEMBER 27, 2024 at the church.

Bob was born on December 25,1946, in Decorah, Iowa, He was the eldest of six children born to Ignatius and Pauline (Busta) Kriener.

Bob’s early years were spent in Fort Atkinson, where he attended St. John Nepomucene School until eighth grade. He continued his education at Turkey Valley High School, graduating with the class of 1965. A passionate sports enthusiast, Bob’s love for baseball began in high school and remained a central part of his life, eventually leading him to become an ardent Atlanta Braves fan.

Following high school, Bob attended Upper Iowa College in Fayette, where he earned a degree in Elementary Education. His forty year journey in education began with student teaching in Nashua, Iowa, where he met Sue Mahoney, the love of his life, through his college roommate, Gary Olson. Bob and Sue were married on September 2, 1972, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Ionia. The couple was blessed with two sons, Mike and Chris, who were the center of Bob’s world.

After student teaching at Nashua, Bob was hired as their sixth grade math teacher for six years, teaching several of Sue’s younger siblings. In 1976, he accepted an elementary teaching position as well as Varsity Girl’s Basketball in Olin, IA.  The Kriener family moved to Brooklyn, IA, in 1979 where Bob taught Jr High Math at BGM and made a significant impact as their coach for State Math Bees. His dedication and expertise led to remarkable successes at these tournaments, earning him admiration from students and colleagues alike. Bob also continued his passion for baseball as BGM’s Varsity Baseball coach along with other coaching duties..
 
In 2000, Bob relocated to Texas. He continued his teaching career within the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District at Seguin Elementary in Richmond, where he maintained his success with State Math Bees. His humor and quick wit were well-known.  He enjoyed cracking jokes and making people laugh. That jovial spirit touched the lives of many, especially the young people he worked with.
 
Bob enjoyed hunting deer and a later hobby included woodworking where he made many bird houses, name boards, benches and tables from raw material purchased from the local saw mill. He and son, Mike, mowed lawns for years in the summer for many residents of Holiday Lake.
 
Bob and Sue are members of St Joseph Parish in Chelsea where he served on the Parish Council for nearly two terms and on the Cluster Finance Council for one term. Faith was always a priority in his life.

Bob is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sue Kriener of Brooklyn, IA; one son, Mike (Lisha) Kriener of The Woodlands, TX; two grandchildren, Cayden and Kennedy Kriener of The Woodlands, TX; three brothers, Ron (Jan) Kriener of Waverly, Loren (Brenda) Kriener of Fort Atkinson, Jim (Danna) Kriener of Fort Atkinson; two sisters, Joan (Willie) Driscoll of Lancaster, WI, Mary (Ruth Widerski) Kriener of Thornton, CO; many in-laws, nieces, nephews and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son in infancy, Christopher Kriener; in-laws, Jim and Mary Mahoney.
