Robert "Bob" Hill age 94 of Viroqua, WI formerly of New Hampton, IA died Wednesday, November 8, 2023 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, WI. Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2023 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton with Rev. James Goerend presiding. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in New Hampton. Friends may greet the family an hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home. 641-394-4334. Bob was born the son of William and Eva (Holmes) Hill on December 11, 1928. Robert graduated from New Hampton High School and went on to work for his parents’ trucking company. He married Eleanor “Ellie” Marie Hill on October 7, 1950, and they shared 70 years together before her passing on May 22, 2021. Robert was called into service during the Korean Conflict, where he served in the U. S. Army. Once back home, he returned to trucking; eventually taking over ownership of the company from his dad until his own retirement in the late 80’s. Although he retired from trucking, he never really gave it up and always found a reason to get behind a steering wheel. He was an active member of the community and represented New Hampton on the Chickasaw Board of Supervisors, served on the county mental health board, volunteered at the food shelter and for meals-on-wheels, and drove people to medical appointments in Rochester, MN. Robert and Ellie moved to Viroqua in 2012, and he helped at Bethel Home on the Birchwood Board. He was a proud veteran and was involved in the American Legion, where he served in the honor guard. His favorite pastime was anything that involved water, especially boating or skiing. Above all, nothing ranked higher in his life than his family, and the pride and joy of that group was his four daughters. Robert is survived by his daughters: Christine Radcliffe, Mary Jo “JD” (Gary) Debner, Jean (Jim) Cox, Margy (Benjamin) Burton; 8 grandchildren: Rob Radcliffe, Jenni (Jason) Fields, Brad Debner, Trina (TJ) Shutters, Brandon Cox, Lane (PJ) Carl, Brittany Burton, and Kateri Burton; 9 great-grandchildren: Ben, Max, Lynnea, Ford, Joseph, Aden, Brooklynn, Christian, and Nico; and a sister, Lois (Larry) Straw. In addition to his parents and wife, Ellie, Robert was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Joseph Radcliffe.

Guestbook

  1. Bob & his wife Elly were neighbors of mine on East Spring. They both were always so kind to me. Sympathy to their daughters and their families.

  2. My condolences to the family on your loss. Bob and Ellie were next door neighbors to us for many years. Our young son would see Bob out in the back yard and would holler from our patio door “Mr Hill , wanna play?”. Bob was forever picking up golf balls out of his yard that our son would constantly be hitting over there unbeknownst to us. He would just throw them back into our yard. I asked Bob one time if he felt like Mr. Wison (Dennis the Menace’s neighbor). He replied oh yes. They were great neighbors.

  3. Our sincere sympathy to all of Bob’s family. He was a nice man who lived a fulfilling life. May he rest in peace.

  4. Thinking of you all sending hugs and prayers Please let Bob know my knees are still ticklish. He and Bud are probably already fixing a boat to go fishing 🙏.

  5. My deepest sympathy to all of Bob’s daughters. Your dad was a great guy. I grew up next door to your grandma Eva so I saw your dad a lot. And only living a block from you! When I was Director of the Housing Authority Bob was one of my board members and board chairman later on. I could alway count on him for ideas. He always talked about you girls when we had a chance to chat. Hugs and prayers to you and your families.

  6. To the Hill family. So sorry for your loss of your father. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all. I remember the good times back in New Hampton. My deepest sympathy and hugs to you all.
