She received her education in a county school near Elma. After completion, Rita helped on the family farm for several years. Rita started waitressing in a local caf in Cresco and it was while working at the caf her friends arranged a blind date for her. This is when she met her future husband Harland. The couple were married May 22, 1954, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Protivin. Shortly after marriage, they moved onto the family farm near Bassett and soon after moved into their new house in Bassett. It was at this time they were blessed with their two children. Rita was a devoted mother, taking care of Marita, her daughter with special needs. She was the quintessential mother, helping her husband on the farm when needed, cooking and taking care of the house, and tending to her children. Rita did whatever was necessary for the family. Yearly, Rita would have a large garden filled with a variety of vegetables. She was an exceptional seamstress, making clothes for herself and her children. She spent hour after hour lovingly crocheting and quilting for her family. Rita was also a very good cook and was known for her famous potato salad recipe. Rita is survived by her daughter, Connie (Dale) Poe of Greene; one brother, Vincent (Sadie) Thraenert of Cresco; two grandchildren, Becky Poe and Seth (Jacque) Poe; and two great-grandchildren, Brendan and Connor Poe. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harland on May 27, 1988; one daughter, Marita Guthart; one brother, William Robert Thraenert; and one sister, Kathleen Thraenert.
