Rebecca L. (Dowd) Sherrod was born October 31, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Bill (Tiny) and Sara (Maher) Dowd. The family moved Omaha, NE, then to Sioux City, where she graduated in 1972 from Bishop Heelan Catholic High School. She received her formal education at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and began her Special Education teaching career in Dubuque. After moving to the New Orleans area, she was united in marriage to Thomas Sherrod. To this union, two children were born, Alex and Austin. Rebecca (Becky) had worked in the Jefferson Parish School system for over 30 years. After retirement, she worked as a tour guide at Mardi Gras World, where she was able to meet and educate tourists from around the world about Mardi Gras traditions, and her favorite subject, New Orleans history.
She loved her two cats, Bubba and Snow who had roots from the family farmstead near Jerico / Saude. She greatly enjoyed spending summers “at the farm,” and attending many of the annual Hurd family reunions. She loved to travel and especially enjoyed her time in Venice, Italy. She was greatly moved by all the support and assistance she received by family, friends and strangers after her home was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Survivors include her sons, Alex (Mignon) Sherrod, of Savannah, Georgia and Austin (Linh) Sherrod, of Harvey, Louisiana; brother Leo (Bev) Dowd, New Hampton; sister Chris (Marvin) Pettinger, Northglenn, Colorado; nephew Derek Dowd, Lawler, Vaughn Pettinger, Northglenn, CO; nieces Merissa Pettinger, Northglenn, CO and Lindsey Dowd, Lawler; numerous special cousins and cousins-cousins, along with her forever friend Marie O’Donnell, New Orleans, LA.
She was preceded in death by her parents and former husband.
Condolences to Becky’s family. I met her when she was in New Hampton after Katrina. She came to the public library and we had many interesting conversations. I also have fond memories of her parents, Bill and Sara.
Love you Becky. I will miss you. Always looked forward to you coming home. Russ Ball

Bec’s Celebration of Life Open House in New Orleans May 2018
Becky and I became friends while going to UNI. We were both in the special education program and worked dinner theatres together in the summers. We remained friends after school and did several fun trips together. My memories of Becky always involve laughter, singing songs, and having a great time! She will be greatly missed. My sympathies to her family.
Becky, I miss you so much. I have to laugh at all the adventures we got into over the years, the skiing trip in a ar from LA. The inner rubing at the reservoir. The white water rafting in CO where we saw the white “bare”. Life was an adventure around you. So long, mt friend!
Please accept my deepest condolences to the entire family. May you all find comfort and peace in the coming days.
