Phyllis M. Engel age 93 of Fredericksburg, Iowa died Tuesday, September 16, 2014, at Linn Haven Rehab & Healthcare in New Hampton. Funeral Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 19, 2014, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, with Pastor Mike Christie presiding. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg, with Jeff Engel, Jodi Engel, Kim VerSteeg, Dan VerSteeg, Jamie Engel, Mike Saunders, and Dena Saunders Serving as pallbearers. Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Hugeback - Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Friday. Online condolences may be left at hugebackfuneralhome.com Phyllis Madeline (Bruntz) Engel was born April 20, 1921, in Friend, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Lena (Schwabauer) Bruntz, the oldest of four children. She graduated from Friend High School in 1938, and became a teacher in a rural school in the Friend area. Phyllis was united in marriage to Carl Engel on May 10, 1943 in Friend, Nebraska. The couple moved to Iowa where they became parents to Darlys and Larry. They moved to the farm they purchased near Fredericksburg and lived there for forty-four years, moving into Fredericksburg in 1996. Phyllis worked many enjoyable years as an Operating Room Technician at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. Phyllis had many hobbies that include, crocheting, knitting, and doing crafts which she, along with Carl’s quilts, they would sell at craft shows. Phyllis is survived by one daughter, Darlys (Stan) Saunders of Waverly, IA; daughter-in-law, Frances Engel of New Hampton, IA; grandchildren, Mike (Dena) Saunders of West Lafayette, IN, Kim (Dan) VerSteeg, of Janesville, IA, Jeff (Jodi) Engel of Moberly, MO, Jamie Engel of Iowa City, IA; great-grandchildren, Zylee and Morgan Saunders, Ethan, Mary, and Emma VerSteeg, Jackson and Jacey Engel; brother, John Ivan (Doris) Bruntz of Wheatridge, CO; sister, Orma (Duane) Breckbill of Greenwood, NE; sister-in-law, Olga Bruntz of Friend, NE; along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Carl in 2000; a brother, Dwaine in 2014, son, Larry in 2008.

Phyllis was such a caring kind person to all after I left Iowa I always stopped to visit her and she loved company and what a Christian positive out look she had on life and she lived a great long life.. sure heaven welcomed her eagerly … ;

Your mom always made me feel special. She was a wonderful caring person.and will be missed.I am sorry I will not be able to make it to the visitation or funeral. I had shoulder surgery.   4. I remember as a child going to Carl and Phyllis’ during holiday’s. Some of the highlights were: Easter egg hunts, the candy, great food and riding the three wheeler. I have fond memories of plyaing with Mike and Kim Saunders, and Jeff and Jamie Engel. My prayer to the family is that you find comfort in God’s sovereignty and to be there for one another in this time of transition and grief.
