Paul lived most of his life in Linn County on his beautiful acreage on Zika Avenue in Cedar Rapids, with his parents, Otto and Sylvia Usher. He served his time in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and served as administrative assistant for Admiral Chester Nemitz. Paul retired from the Cedar Rapids office of Quaker Oats. He loved the wildlife that often appeared at his doorstep to be fed. After his health began to fail, he was unable to care for the little farm and the critters. He moved into Meth-Wick Manor and enjoyed the companionship of the many residents living there. Survivors include one brother, Delbert Usher, of Cedar Rapids; many nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Pearl Usher who died at the age of nine. Paul had fond and loving memories of Pearl, who passed away at such an early age. Also preceding his death were three sisters, Alice (Arthur) Swinton, Imogene (Verle) Kruse, Donna (Ed) Mittan; one brother, Harold (Eleanor) Usher.

  1. I was honored to have been the escort for Paul when he went on the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. He was a gentle, intelligent man, who was proud of his service. Even though we only spent that day together, seeing all of the memorials in D.C., we talked about many things. He was overcome with emotion when we arrived back in Cedar Rapids to a group of around 600 people welcoming the Veterans back home. He didn’t feel he had earned that attention, but I assured him that he most certainly did deserve it. I will never forget that day and how honored I was to be his escort.
