Pat was born on Nov. 5, 1943, to Robert and Arlene (Cutsforth) Kolthoff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in New Hampton, where she grew up and attended school. At the age of nine, she was diagnosed with polio but she overcame the disease’s challenges.
She received her education in New Hampton schools and developed her feisty personality at a young age.
Through mutual friends, she met a Marine named Herbert Long, and the two hit it off almost immediately. They were married on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 1968, in New Hampton. The couple had a daughter, Karen.
Pat was a housewife for several years before starting “In Between,” an arcade business where kids from New Hampton and beyond came to play games, hit up the “candy counter” and claim prizes for themselves. She later worked at “The Hole,” a bar that was in the basement of what is now The Miller Apartments.
She enjoyed hanging out with her friends, playing cards, having a few drinks and gambling.
Pat adored her first grandson, Lee, who like her husband, was a Marine, and she also was proud of her other grandson, James. Pat has been a member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit #38 in New Hampton since 1971.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Hampton before moving to State Center in 2018 to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Karen Long of State Center, IA; two grandsons, Lee Michael (Christina) Smith of Marion, IA, James (Olivia) Long of Nevada, IA; five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Ella, Christopher, Iris, and Violet; a sister, Nancy (Kolthoff) Brettmann of Denver, IA; a brother, Cliff (Marge) Kolthoff of Cedar Falls, IA,
She was preceded in death by her husband Herbert (Lee) Long; her parents, Robert and Arlene (Cutsforth) Kolthoff; two brothers, John and Bobby, two sisters in infancy, Helen and Cheryl; brother-in-law, Tom Brettmann; special friend, JR Mullings.
