Nora was born in Wisconsin Rapids, Wi. in 1928 to a large farming family.  The Speltz’s moved to a farm south of New Hampton and remained there through most of her growing years.  Nora had a personality and inspiring work ethic as evidenced by her work managing the lunch program at St. Joseph’s elementary school for over 30 years.

It is still hard to not meet someone in New Hampton that does not remembers her work in the Rose Room and share fond memories.  Nora was also an accomplished angler and loved her time in the outdoors.  She won numerous contests and awards for her ability to catch big fish.  As a parent she instilled in her children and grandchildren a solid line between good and bad.  Her quiet care and compassion was well known and respected much more than she would ever admit.

Nora is survived by Cyril Speltz, brother and Mary Buckendahl, sister; her children, LaVonne Johnson-Edson, Dan Johnson, Don Johnson, and Nancy Flaskrud.

She was preceded by Lelan Johnson, husband, Ray Vobr, husband, her mother, Marie Speltz, father Ben Speltz, sister Loraine Ball, brothers Norman Speltz, Gordon Speltz, Benny Speltz, Len Speltz and many beloved pets.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. LaVonne and family,
I have good memories of your mom from our childhood. She seemed so young. She was always nice to me. My sincere sympathy to you.
    Mary Sharon Peraud

  2. I am so glad I got to know Nora these last few years, I will miss our afternoon bingo games. It was an honor to be with her during this time. I will cherish the memories.

  3. My deepest sympathy to Nora’s family. When Nora was cook for St. School lunch program, I was secretary for the parish and was able to take part in some of the delicious meals she provided for the teachers.

  4. My sympathy to Nora’s family in the passing of their mother. Nora was in-charge of the lunch room for the children of St.Josrph S hool. They were aware of a quiet voice, awaiting their turn and verbalizing please and thank you. Food was not wasted. Rest in peace, Nora. You earned it!

  5. Aunt Nora really knew how to rock n roll. She use to take little pebbles of rock & put them in a rock tumbler & make pretty jewlery after they were done polishing them. She had a beautiful heart & soul. I love you Aunt Nora.

  6. Prayers for Nora’s family. I have a lot of memories of the St. Joe’s lunch room. We were allowed when we got to the upper grades to take turns working in the lunch room with Nora and Mae Gaffney-handing out sandwiches, or serving sometimes and doing dishes. I was always glad when it was my turn to work with these two fine ladies, and cooks! Rest in Peace Nora.
