Merlin “Charlie” Kenneth Dietz age 78 of Plainfield, IA passed away peacefully at home on the farm on March 18, 2019.
A funeral service and celebration of life will be held 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 22, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Plainfield, IA with Tom Geise celebrating the service. Interment will follow at Willow Lawn Cemetery in Plainfield with Brice Dietz, Blake Dietz, Hailey Schmitz, Brock Dietz, Trae Geise and Braxton Dietz serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Hyde, Larry Balsley, Lee Peters, Richard Gilbert, Kevin Zwanziger, John Barnett and Chris Tjebkes.
Friends may greet the family from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 21, 2019 at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home – Olson Chapel in Nashua. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
Charlie was born on September 28, 1940 in Bremer County, the son of Lewis and Mildred (White) Dietz. He spend his entire life in the Plainfield area and graduated from Plainfield High School in 1958. Charlie and Janice were married on October 27, 1963, to this union two children were born. They were so excited to move to the farm 55 years ago as they both wanted the farm life. Charlie put his heart and soul into the dairy operation, animals and field work. He taught many what a strong work ethic is.
In order to make it all work in tough times he worked at the Plainfield Post Office for ten years. Charlie was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served on several boards. He also served on the City Council for 8 years, was on the Farmer’s Cooperative board and the Fire Department. He was known for helping others around town in their times of need.
He is survived by his wife, Janice of Plainfield, IA; two children, Paula (Tom) Geise, Paul Dietz, both of Plainfield, IA; six grandchildren Brice, Blake, Hailey, Brock, Trae and Braxton; two sisters, Marge Reeves of Nashua, IA, Sally Vowell of Charles City, IA; many other family members and wonderful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lewis and Mildred Dietz; five siblings, Dick, Don, Buzz, MaryAnn and Floyd.
The family wants to thank Unity Point at Home and Unity Point Hospice for their caring support.
