Merle Myron Usher was born July 21,1928, near Bassett in rural Chickasaw County Iowa, the son of Walter and Justina (Erickson) Usher. He attended rural country school through the 8th grade and then helped his family on the farm. He met his future wife Mary while playing softball in the Bassett area. The couple were united in marriage on October 28, 1950, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. To this union three children were born, Jeff, Barb and Julie. The couple made Nashua their home and Merle worked at the former White Farm in Charles City for 28 years. He was an avid racoons hunter. He enjoyed going out late at night with his friends in search of coons. Once he retired from White Farm, he gained a new interest in horse racing and would race three to four horses throughout the summer at local race tracks in Iowa, Minnesota and Nebraska. His prized horse’s name was “Bergman” who won many races in his career. Merle enjoyed gardening and always had a garden that was to large. He loved to share and give away his produce. He also enjoyed getting out into the community to see neighbors and friends around town.
