Services will be held at Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield, IA, with military honors conducted by the Nashua V.F.W. Post. When he graduated high school at age 17 in May of 1943, he was too young to be drafted into the war. Instead of that, he took the train to Washington, D.C. to serve as a file clerk for the FBI. After he turned 18, he was inducted into the Marine Corps. He served in the Russell Islands, Okinawa, and North China. After the war, Mark joined his brother at Watchmaker’s School in Kansas City. He later took a jewelry repair course. While in Kansas City, he met a fellow Iowa veteran, Lucille Nourse, and they were married at the Little Brown Church in Nashua on November 30, 1947. Mark and Lucille owned a jewelry store in Nashua, and later in Charles City. Actually, the first store in Nashua was a watch repair shop, with the only things for sale being a few watch bands. Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Alan) Hasenwinkel of Cedar Falls, Shirley (Scot) Demro of Nashua; ten grandchildren, Matt Hasenwinkel, Megan Hasenwinkel, Brooke Jones, Kelly Crouch, Shane Link, Cade Demro, Cole Demro, Chad Smith, Sara Shaw and Casey Smith; fifteen great-grandchildren. Mark is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. He was a social and outgoing person; a natural storyteller. He enjoyed playing golf, cards, and spending winters in Mesa, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille on September 1, 2012; son, Gary Smith in 1992; three brothers, Wendell, Wayne and Glen Smith; one sister, Edna McNinch.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Hi, I’m Bonnie (Herkes) Nelson. My family moved to Charles City the summer before my senior year in high school, a very tough time to move. Mr. Smith gave me a job at the jewelry store. They were so good to me. Mr. Smith spent time with me, teaching me how to look at a diamond to tell if it was real, and to look at the cut and quality, how to change watch bands, how to check prongs on rings, and many other things. I loved working at the jewelry store. I remember Mark Smith as a very caring man, and it always meant a lot to me that he helped me through a difficult year by hiring me and taking time with me to make me feel like I was contributing at the store. My condolences to the family.

  2. I remember Smith’s Jewelry in the Charles City Mall, on the corner, not to far from Steve Rye Photography. When I was married the first time (1980), that was where our 3-ring set came from. Wonderful people. Sympathy to the entire family.

  3. I enjoyed taking care of Mark at the assisted living for a couple years. He was a nice man, always very polite and loved to talk. I enjoyed hearing of his jewelry store days and even his war stories. My condolences!

  4. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss, Mark loved his family and will be deeply missed.

  5. Worked with Shirley at 1st Security Bank and Trust. Sorry about your Dad, Shirley! Thoughts and prayers with you and your family!
