Mark Edwin Stirm, age 63 of Nashua, Iowa died Friday, October 29, 2021, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly, Iowa. Friends may greet the family 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 pm. Sunday, November 14, 2021, at the Hugeback Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory - Olson Chapel in Nashua. Mark was born November 19, 1957, in Waverly, IA, the son of Edwin and Luella (Hauser) Stirm. He grew up on a farm near Charles City before the family, which by then included his younger sister Connie, moved to Nashua. Growing up, he spent every summer in Canada, helping his parents on a fishing resort they owned. He loved being on the water — be it fishing or skiing. Mark was a 1976 graduate of Nashua High School, where he was a pretty good wrestler and football player for the Bulldogs. He attended Dickinson State College in North Dakota for three semesters to obtain an associate’s degree in engineering. Construction jobs, though, were tough to come by at the time so Mark went to work with his parents when they bought Daniel’s Restaurant, which became the Pub at the Pinicon, in New Hampton. He then went to work for Combined Insurance and worked there for more than 20 years before health issues forced him to retire early. But Mark wasn’t the retiring sort, and he worked as bartender at the Townhouse in Nashua for seven or eight years before tending bar at the Whiskey Junction in Denver for the past three years. Mark was a social guy; he loved to have company and loved to visit, which made him a natural behind the bar. He always made sure he and his friends had a “meeting place” and no one ever left Mark’s house without a smile. You always knew where you stood with Mark, but he was the kind of person who got along with pretty much everyone. He also enjoyed getting together with his sister and their cousins, who lived throughout the state. Mark was also a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ-Pleasant Hill. He battled health problems, including congestive heart failure, for many years, but he never lost his love for people and visiting. He will be missed by those who loved him, but we’re sure today he’s having a good time and visiting with old and new friends in Heaven. Mark is survived by his sister, Connie Thompson of Nashua, and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
