Margaret J. Smith age 94 of St. Lucas, IA, died, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, September 27, 2012, at the Ossian Senior Hospice in Ossian. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, with Rev. Marvin Salz celebrating the Mass. The pall will be place by Margaret's children. Lector for the service will be her son, Robert Smith. Kathy Meyer will be the organist accompanying Jim Mihm, Leslie Mihm and Danielle Mihm in song. Presenting the offertory gifts will be her sons, Louie and Dan Smith. Eucharistic ministers will be Becky Smith, Trudy Smith and Robert Smith. Interment will be in the church cemetery with her nine grandsons serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be her sixteen granddaughters. Friends may greet the family 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. Sunday,September 30, 2012, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, where there will be a 3:00 p.m. rosary and a 5 p.m.parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Monday. Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home, New Hampton is in charge of the arrangements. If so desired, memorials are preferred to the Shelly Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund, a scholarship for students who have experienced family or personal adversity. Margaret Josephine Smith was born July 23, 1918, on the Mihm family farm near St. Lucas, in rural Fayette County, Ia, the daughter of Louis and Theresa (Bruess) Mihm. She received her education at St. Luke’s School in St. Lucas. On June 6, 1938, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, St. Lucas, she married Milton John Smith. To this union eight children were born. The couple raised their family on the farm. Margaret enjoyed crafts, quilting, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed her years as a bus driver for the Turkey Valley School district after retiring from the farm and moving into St.Lucas. She was a member of the St. Luke’s Catholic Church and Rosary society, was a 50 year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Margaret will be remembered as a caring and understanding mother, an untiring worker for her family, church and community, unselfishly dedicated to her family,devoted to her faith and quietly serving us all. Survivors include six sons, Jerome (Judy) Smith of Ft.Collins, CO, Robert (Ronnie Jo) Smith of Hickory, NC, Daniel (Rebecca) Smith of Ft. Atkinson, Kenneth Smith of Rogersville, MO, Ronald (Sue) Smith of Rockford, MI, Louis (Trudy) Smith of Ft. Atkinson; one daughter, Ruth Ann (Mark) Stoltzmann of Scottsdale, AZ; a son-in-law, Joe Bouska of Charles City; 25 grandchildren; David, Jon, James, Brian, Benjamin and Brad Smith, Michael Klemmer, Randy and Steve Bouska, Jennifer, Susan, Alison, Barbara, Katrina, Meg, Danielle and Sarah Smith, Deanna Graham, Rebecca Kruse, Linda Steinberg, Carmen Broadbent, Kelly Rudd, Lisa Guilliot, Kristin Stanek and Jackie Jenkins. 34 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcella Schmitt of New Hampton; sister-in-law, Frieda Mihm of St. Lucas. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Milton on October 30, 1994; one daughter, Norma Jean Bouska; a granddaughter, Shelly Smith; a great-grandson, Leif Klemmer, a daughter-in-law; Patricia Smith; two brothers, Linus and Cletus Mihm; one sister, Dorothy Kuennen.

  1. Dear family of Margaret Smith – I am so sorry to hear of Margaret’s passing. I was in North Carolina last week so did not hear of her death and only just read about it now online. She was a wonderful lady and I know she will be missed by many. My sincere sympathy to all the family members and friends. Karen Schmitt
