Madonna T. O'Connell age 89 of Mason City, IA, formerly of Lawler, IA, died peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the Muse-Norris Hospice in Mason City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, NOVEMBER 30, 2019, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler with Rev. Aaron Junge celebrating the Mass. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, NOVEMBER 29, 2019, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the America's Rosary followed by a Parish Scripture Service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Catholic Daughters of the America’s, Court Mt. Carmel or Hospice of North Iowa Madonna Theresa O’Connell was born August 25, 1930, between Waucoma, IA, and Jackson Junction, the daughter of Bertram and Henrietta (Riehle) Schissel. Later the Schissel family moved to New Hampton where Madonna received her education and was a 1948 graduate of the New Hampton High School. Madonna worked at the Fireman’s Theater in New Hampton and it was there she met her future husband, Keith O’Connell. The couple were married on August 25, 1948, Madonna’s eighteenth birthday. This union was blessed with seven children. Madonna was a very active member of her church and the Catholic Daughters of the America’s. She loved birds, flowers, fishing, golfing and decorating for the holidays. She was an avid reader, baker, seamstress and bridge card player. Survivors include seven children, Patricia O’Connell of Waterloo, Marie O’Connell of Iowa Falls, Ron (Rosalie) O’Connell of West Salem, WI, Dan (Tina) O’Connell of Ames, Donita (Tracy Quandahl) O’Connell of West Union, Cindy (Patrick) Nulty of Ely, IA, Paula (Rene) Recinos of Mason City; thirteen grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren; one brother, Tony (Lucy) Schissel; two sisters, Betty Weilacker of CA, Mary Peterson of TX; brother-in-law, Luke Bohr of Decorah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Keith on February 16, 2007, two brothers, Willis Schissel and Loras Schissel; three sisters, Norma Krueger, Joan Kipp and Kathy Bohr.

  3. Keith and Madonna were good neighbors for many years. I still remember the day Madonna came over, taking a break from her gardening because she had spied a snake in her flower bed! My sympathy to the family.

I always admired her–a beautiful lady who always seemed to have a calm composure about her…not sure if I could be like that if I had 7 kids 🙂 Remember I probably had more than my fair share of her Christmas cookies at the family get togethers.
