Lugene Anna Treloar was born January 25, 1923, in Fredericksburg, IA, the daughter of Reno and Vina (Leitch) Bravener. She attended country school in rural Fredericksburg and was a 1940 graduate of Fredericksburg High School. Lugene then enrolled at Upper Iowa University earning a teaching certificate. She went on to teach in a one room schoolhouse in rural Fredericksburg from 1941-1946. During her time in high school, she met Robert Treloar. He then left for the service and they began dating when he returned home. The couple was united in marriage on May 9, 1946, at First Baptist Church in Fredericksburg. To this union, two sons; Robert and Roger were born.
Lugene stayed home on the farm taking care of their two sons. She was the fabric of the family that kept everything together. She tended to the home and took great pride in her garden to provide for her family. Whatever tasks needed to be done for the family as a whole, Lugene would see to it they were completed.
As her children entered high school, Lugene decided to resume her collegiate studies. She enrolled at Upper Iowa University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1972. Lugene worked at Fredericksburg Elementary School for 26 years before she retired.
Lugene enjoyed playing cards, quilting, playing the piano, and was a remarkable seamstress. She was an avid gardener who raised many species of flowers. She and Bob were antique collectors and preserved many family heirlooms. She was an active member of the Hillcrest Baptist & Brethren Church in Fredericksburg. Family was extremely important to Lugene, and she enjoyed spending as much time with them as possible.
Lugene is survived by two sons, Robert (Linda) Treloar of Fountain Hills, AZ, Roger (Suzanne) Treloar of Solon, IA; three grandchildren, Chad Treloar of Iowa City, Ali Treloar of Haiti, and Laura (Steven) Grieg of Ames.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert in 2008; granddaughter, Joy Treloar in 2013; one brother in infancy; and one sister Holly Oswalt in 2016.
Dear family of Lugene, I don’t know if you’ll see this, being as late as it is, but if you do… I worked at Hillcrest until recently and it was an honor and privilege to be one of Lugene’s caregivers. We shared some good laughs and had some nice conversations together. My husband was a local pastor in Sumner, so we had the Wed. morning service every 5th week or so, and Lugene was very faithful to come for the eight years we were there. Whenever I was in the service, I would sing a solo. Lugene loved to hear ‘His Eye Is on the Sparrow,’ and she was always asking me to sing it. (I had to tell her I needed to sing other songs, too, but then I would sing it for her when I was taking care of her.) When the time neared for us to move away from Sumner, I promised Lugene that I would sing for her when I knew it would be my last time at Hillcrest…and I’m glad I was able to sing ‘her’ song one last time before I left town! She told me she knew she was saved and would be in Heaven, so I look forward to seeing her some day–maybe she’ll even sing to me! May God give you comfort and peace in the days to come.
You have my heartfelt sympathy in your loss. What a blessing to have had your mom so long and to be able to spend time with her. Treasure the memories.
My heartfelt sympathy to your family, Lugene, who I’m sorry that I didn’t get to know. I am Lugene’s cousin, Isabell Leitch. I always enjoyed getting to come to your parents’ home in Fredericksburg when I was a little girl living on a farm near Jackson Jct. You and Holly would always do fun things with my sister, Rosemary, and I always thought living in town like you, was so much better than on the farm. I spent one summer in the Burg, as it was called, helping my Grandma Leitch when she broke her leg. You were always doing special things for my Grandma and I always appreciated the way you visited her every day, bringing nice things for to eat. When I visited Rosemary in the Sumner nursing home more recently II would stop to have a short visit with you and as usual you had that great smile and friendly greeting. I’m so thankful I had a wonderful cousin like you. God’s Blessings to all of your family. Isabell
I had no idea that I had another relation out there. I’m sure my dad Thomas Leitch knew you well also. Very sorry for your loss. Kathy (Leitch) Riggle
I grew up in Fredericksburg, (daughter of John and Dorothy Leitch), so I I knew and enjoyed visiting with Lugene. When my parents lived ‘in town’, Lugene would stop in often to say hello after school. I moved to CA, but came back to Iowa for visits and cousin reunions .Lugene and I both did family history, and shared some information and documents. Sorry ,that we haven’t had any reunions in the past several years, but will always remember our past and enjoyable ones. I would enjoy meeting Lugenes boys and family. I have some wonderful memories. Phyllis ‘Leitch’ Lambeth.

Mrs Treloar was one of my favorite teachers ever. I was luck enough to have her for both 5th and 6th grade, as we used to do combination classes back in the day. She was a great teacher, funny, and she always made me feel challenged, but appreciated extra effort. It was an extra treat when she and Bob video taped our wedding day back in 1983. She was a great lady and I still think about her impact on me a lot to this day. My sympathies to the family Chris O’Connell Crowe
Our Sympathy, Roger and Margo Pleggenkuhle
Lugene was my fourth grade teacher..I have enjoyed reconnecting with her…She remembered me from fourth grade the moment I walked in the door. One of my favorite memories is from ten months ago when she brought me the Fredericksburg Review and she said, ‘Beth, Ivy Hirsch made it to state!’ With the biggest smile on her face and such pride. I’m going to truly miss her. You have my deepest sympathy.
Mrs. Treloar was my sixth grade teacher at Fredericksburg Elementary School. She was one of the best. I enjoyed visiting with her when I used to see my mother at Hillcrest. She was a very nice lady. My thoughts and prayers to the entire family. Jane Melugin Brooks
