Leon A. Hugeback, age 76 of New Hampton, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Parish - St. Joseph Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Interment with military honors will follow in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton. Visitation will be held in the St. Joseph’s Gathering Space on Friday, April 1, 2011, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. with a scripture service at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service on Saturday. Leon was born on May 14, 1934 in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Joe and Ann (Muhlbauer) Hugeback. He graduated from Manning High School. After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Chicago, where he attended college. He was a 1961 graduate of Worsham College of Mortuary Science. He worked in funeral homes in the Chicago area. He was united in marriage to Rose McEnroe. Leon moved to New Hampton where he worked at Larkin-Martin Funeral Home and in 1979 he became owner. His son, Bryan, purchased the funeral home in 1996 and Leon retired. In 1984 he married Barb Sullivan. Leon was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Lion’s Club and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Barb; one daughter, Linda (Bob) Cenek of Easton, PA; two sons, Bryan (Gayla) Hugeback of New Hampton, John (Carrie) Hugeback of Bartlesville, OK; seven grandchildren, Bernard, Nicholas, Maggie, Andy, Elizabeth, Emily, and Rachel; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and Joe Hugeback; a brother, Joe Hugeback Jr.; and a sister in infancy. Fullerton - Hage Funeral Home, Charles City is assisting the family.

  26. Tuesday night we were with a group that got to telling stories and lo and behold! Leon was part of the stories! Imagine that! He was ALWAYS fun and entertaining to visit with. Hopefully the great memories will help you all come to grips with his passing. He certainly played an important part in helping many, many people with the loss of a loved one.   33. Oh my gosh, I have so many fond memories of Leon and the Hugeback family I don’t even know where to begin. Our families were friends for years and years and we kids grew up together. Linda, Bryan and John, I am so sorry for your loss. Leon was a wonderful man. I think he was one of the first people my dad met when we first moved to New Hampton in the early 60s – something about moving a piano, I think. I’ll treasure all the memories. God Bless.

  50. I have many fond memories of growing up around the Hugeback family. Fishing with Leon at Clear Lake or Lake City; or the many late night poker games with Bryan and John at Leon’s kitchen table. Leon was quick with his wit and warm with his smile and mannerisms. He was a good person that was always fun to be around. My heart goes out to Barb, Linda, Bryan, John and their families.
