Lee Stiefel, age 65 of New Hampton, Iowa died Wednesday evening, January 28, 2009, at his home from cancer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 31, 2009, at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center, with Rev. John Harpel celebrating the Mass. The pall will be placed on the casket by his wife and two children. John Tieskotter will serve as lector, and the offertory gifts will be presented by Sheldon Stiefel and Joe Holland. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Hampton with military rites conducted by the New Hampton American Legion Post #38 and VFW Post #5238. Pallbearers are David Vollenweider, Wilfred Tieskotter, Shelby Stapleton, Jason Gardner, Jonathan Gardner, Joshua Tieskotter, Jared Tieskotter, and Salina Stapleton. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry Barta, Ray Kapler, John Meyer, Jim Duffy, Joe Schwickerath, John Rosonke, and Kim Leichtman. Friends may call 3:00 - 8:00 p.m. Friday at Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Knights of Columbus Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Parish Scripture Service. Visitation continues 8:00 -10:00 a.m. at the funeral home on Saturday. Lee Larry Stiefel was born July 6, 1943, in New Hampton, IA, the son of Walter and Beulah (Swancutt) Stiefel. He received his education in New Hampton and was a graduate of the New Hampton High School Class of 1962. He worked briefly at the former Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City before being inducted into the United States Navy on July 2, 1964. He served during Vietnam receiving a Service Medal with one Bronze Star, a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was honorably discharged on June 2, 1967. On August 29, 1970, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler, he married Edna Tieskotter. To this union two children were born. Lee had worked at Sara Lee for 28 years and at Featherlite for five years until his health necessitated retirement. Lee loved teaching youth as a CCD teacher, a 4-H leader and was active with the Boy Scouts. He enjoyed woodcarving, welding, bowling, golfing, and football. His greatest joy came from the time he was able to spend with his family. Memberships include Holy Family Parish, the American Legion, VFW, and the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife, Edna of New Hampton; one daughter, Sherri (Bill) Holland of Decorah; one son, Sheldon Stiefel of New Hampton; two grandchildren, Joe and Camryn Holland; his sister, Gloria (Jim) Stapleton of New Hampton, a brother-in-law, Jerry Flick of Nashua; his mother-in-law, Adella Tieskotter of New Hampton. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Shirley Flick.
