Lawrence 'Bud' Hruska, age 92 of Lawler, Iowa died Friday, January 29, 2010, at Wellington Place in Decorah.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday February 1, 2010, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Lawler will Rev. David Beckman officiating. The pall will be placed by Mark and Brad Hruska. Lector for the service will be Jaclyn Hruska Jacobsen. Verna Orvis will be the organist accompanying Mike Carlin singing, “Amazing Grace”, “On Eagles Wings”, “Loving and Forgiving” and “Be Not Afraid”. Presenting the offertory gifts will be Jaclyn Hruska Jacobsen and Nicholas Hruska.
Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Reilly Ridge rural Lawler with Michael Hruska, Jonathan Hruska, Paul Hruska, Richard Hruska, Larry Hruska and Steve Hruska as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Chuck Vikdal, Clarence Kreiner, Dean Fisher, Allen Borlaug, Larry Jirak, Norbert Shileny and Charlie Orvis. Military honors will be conducted by the Harold Redman Post #279, Lawler.
Friends may call 4 - 7 p.m. Sunday January 31, 2010, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Lawrence “Bud” Louis Hruska was born January 16, 1918, in Ludlow, South Dakota, the son of William and Vlasta (Vavrock) Hruska. At an early age his family moved to Lawler, Iowa where he received his education in rural country schools. On April 7, 1942, Bud was inducted into the United States Army, serving in the 62nd Fighter Squadron. He was part of the Normandy air offensive receiving a Bronze Star.
On December 19, 1947, in South Hampton, England he was united in marriage to Naomi Bicknell. The couple honeymooned in Switzerland. To this union five sons were born. Naomi and Bud made their home north of Lawler, where they farmed and raised livestock, until recently moving to Decorah due to health reasons.
Bud was a founding co-leader of Utica Lucky 4‘s 4-H Club, co-founder of 4-H Achievement Show Auction and 4-H Leader for over 25 years. Bud and Naomi were also inducted into the State of Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame. He was a lifelong member of the Chickasaw County and Iowa State Cattleman’s Associations and a 40 plus year member of the Lawler Legion.
Bud is survived by his wife of 62 years, Naomi; five sons, Michael Hruska of Charles City, IA, Jonathan (Cathy) Hruska of Oxford, IA, Paul Hruska of Mesa, AZ, Richard (Dianne) Hruska of New Hampton, IA and Larry (Pam) Hruska of Lawler, IA; four grandchildren, Mark Hruska, Brad (Bethany) Hruska, Jaclyn (Chad) Hruska Jacobsen and Nicholas Hruska; three great-grandchildren, Maya, Nora and Ella Hruska; one brother-in-law, Jim Cutsforth of Calmar, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and William Hruska; one sister, Margaret Cutsforth.

I will never forget Lawerence. Everytime he stopped into the office he had a fishing story to tell or pictures to show us. He was full of life and always had a smile on his face when he stopped in. Thoughts and prayers go out to all of his family. Randy and Mary Jane

Dear Naomi and boys, We are honoured and blessed to have Bud and your family in our lives. His amazing long journey on this earth is a tribute to sheer toughness and determination, and is one that we can only hope to emulate. The times we have spent together in Canada will live on–just as the asparagus roots he planted in our fly-in garden! The world has lost one very tough old proud farmer. He certainly was an inspiration to anyone who had a physical setback in life. There wasn’t much that could keep Bud down. He had some great fish stories and sometimes was even carrying the photos to prove it. Bud will be sincerely missed.
