Karla J. Karnik age 54 of New Hampton, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 15, 2014, at her home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, at Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home in Protivin with Rev. George Karnik and Deacon Jim Zajicek presiding.
Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Fort Atkinson with David Karnik, Donna Karnik, Coralee Bigley, Mike Bigley, Vicki Karnik and Dan Ungurian serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Berka, Jeff Pacovsky, Jessie Hauser, Pete Burhart, Doug Dixon, John Penrod, Todd Hubka and Amy Fogerty.
Friends may greet the family 9:00 – 11:00a.m. Tuesday, October 21, 2014, prior to the funeral at Hugeback’s Protivin Funeral Home in Protivin.
Karla Jo Karnik was born November 22, 1959, in New Hampton, IA, the daughter of Raymond and Bernice (Hageman) Karnik. She received her education at Turkey Valley and graduated from Turkey Valley High School in 1978. After high school, Karla attended Ellsworth Community College where she earned a degree in graphic design. Karla moved to Decorah and worked at Rockwell – Collins for several years.
Later, Karla moved to Knoxville, TN where she worked in the graphic design industry. After several years in Knoxville, she decided to move back to her home area of Northeast Iowa. Karla then worked at the Mini- Mart in Protivin for many years until her illness.
Karla is survived by her husband, Jeff Pacovsky of New Hampton, IA; mother, Bernice Karnik of Little Turkey, IA; one brother, David (Donna) Karnik of Fort Atkinson, IA; two sisters, Coralee (Mike) Bigely of Elma, IA, Vicki Karnik (Dan Ungurian) of Inver Grove Heights, MN; nieces & nephews, Kelly Bauer, Patrick Bigley, Pete Bigley, Tracy Adams, Katelynn Hemseth, Kory Karnik, Karly Karnik, Kassidy Karnik, Danielle Ungurian, and Matthew Ungurian; great- nieces & nephews, Jordan, Kyler, Jack, Avalee, and Allie mae; family, Grant Pacovsky, Tracy Pacovsky, Lisa Ollendieck, and Mike Pacovsky.
She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond Karnik (1974); grandparents, Antoine and Mary Karnik, Joe and Katherine Hageman.

Karla was one of the sweetest, most genuine, caring person I know. She was one of earth’s angels. I am so glad she was here to care for & watch over my brother & I am sure she will continue to do so. Much love to you.

I was a classmate of Karla’s and hung out with her and other friends in high school. Karla was a sweet gal and was blessed with a true artistic talent! She was taken too soon from this life, but guess God had other plans for her. My condolences to her family. RIP Karla. Terry Komarek-Bales

I remember times at Chips…We both attended Ellsworth but my favorite memory would be canoeing on a flooded river north of Charles City..We should NOT have been out there. To me she was so pretty and I wanted to impress her so we went.. She was in the front and I was steering . So happy when we got to shore. She was smilling and I was shaking from fear….What a Great person she was……8) Rick Lester…..
Our condolences to all of you. I got to know Karla through the Gebel girls and other friends of hers many years ago. Us girls had some fun times together. I’ll always remember Karla’s artistic talent. Karla may have been shy but sure knew how to light up a room with her smile. May she rest in peace. Irene and Tom Frantzen

We are very saddened to learn of the death of Karla. We understand that she battled valiantly and faced her illness with great courage. Karla was several years younger than me but I do remember talking to her once in high school many years ago. I don’t remember the specific occasion but I do recall her soft voice and stunning attractiveness like it was yesterday – she was a beautiful young lady.
