Jovina Rose Scally age 88 of West Union, formerly of New Hampton died Thursday, June 2, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Home in West Union.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at Holy Family Parish-St. Mary’s Center, New Hampton with Rev. Mark Osterhaus celebrating the Mass. Placing the pall will be Jovina's children. Pianist for the service will be Kathy Wickman accompanying Joyce Shatek, cantor and the Holy Family Resurrection Choir. Soloist will be Mandy Skinner. Lector for the service will be Joe Scally. Presenting the gifts will be her granddaughters.
Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, New Hampton with Dale Roethler, Dave Roethler, Ken Gerleman, Paul Scally, Brandon Skinner and Matthew Skinner serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Jovina's granddaughters; Lindsay Clark, Lacey Clark, Mariah Cross, Melissa Hoover, Angela Barnett, Stephanie Baker and Sarah Baker.
Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 6, 2011, at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in New Hampton where there will be a 4:00 p.m. Catholic Daughters of the Americas Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. scripture service. Visitation continues 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Jovina Rose Scally was born January 11, 1923, in St. Lucas, IA. She was the oldest child of the seven born to Joseph and Rose (Langreck) Gerleman. Her family lived on farms in both St. Lucas and Little Turkey. On October 8, 1945, she married Francis Mac Scally. To this union, seven children were born. Jovina worked outside the home cooking in a restaurant, helping residents in a nursing home, working as a custodian at Turkey Valley School for many years, and dispensing medications at the pharmacy in the former St. Joseph Hospital in New Hampton.
Jovina’s hobbies and interests included gardening, sewing, playing cards, bowling and bingo. Her priorities throughout her life were her marriage, her children and her Catholic Faith. She was an active member of Holy Family Parish, Rosary Society and the Catholic Daughters of the Americas before becoming a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in West Union.
Survivors include two sons, Larry (Lois) Scally of Hudson, IA, Jim Scally of Waterloo; five daughters, Virginia Scally of Minneapolis, Marilyn Scally of Des Moines, Darlys Baker of Johnston, IA, Helen Clark of Des Moines, Karen (Gary) Skinner of West Union; thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert (Celine) Gerleman of Charles City, Joe (Rita) Gerleman of Johnston, IA; one sister, Veronica Roethler of Alta Vista; one sister-in-law, Joannie Gerleman of Ft. Atkinson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis Mac Scally; three brothers, Herman Gerleman, Alfred Gerleman and Eugene Gerleman; one brother-in-law, Francis Roethler.
Dear Helen,Lindsay,& Lacey We send you and the entire family our sincere sympathy and prayers on the passing of your wonderful Mother and Grandmother. We have so many great memories of Jovina!! The time we both worked with her at the hospital and then when she watched the kids at our community exercise class and of course as a lovely and gracious lady. My sympathy to Helen and the rest of the family on the loss of your mother. I remember the many nice visits we had during my years I worked at Fareway and she would come in for groceries. She always greeted me with a smile on her face. I will keep her in my prayers. It’s been so many years since I’ve seen you Helen. Would love to hear from you. I’m sorry to hear of Jovinas passing. She bowled in league in New Hampton and was a lot of fun. Such a nice lady. I’m sure you all will miss her. Maxine
