John P. Kout age 89 of Lawler, Iowa died Tuesday, September 11, 2012, at the New Hampton Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 14, 2012, at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Lawler, with Rev. Nick March celebrating the Mass. Placing the pall will be John Kout, Margaret Nolte, Mary Kruse and JoAnn Mahlstedt. Bob Huinker will be the organist and cantor for the service. Melanie Kruse will be the lector and John's four children will present the offertory gifts. Interment will be in the church cemetery with Mark Kruse, Mike Kruse, Matt Kruse, Myron Kruse,Marvin Kruse, Dean Mahlstedt and Dale Mahlstedt serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are John's granddaughters, Marie Pleggenkuhle, Melanie Kruse, Marjorie Eberling, Ellen Hunley, Jolene Harding, Alicia Rose Imbouathong. Arrangements are with Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Lawler. Friends may greet the family 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where there will be a 4:00 p.m. rosary and a 7:00 p.m. parish scripture service. Visitation continues an hour prior to the Mass at the church on Friday. John Peter Kout was born November 15, 1922, in Lawler, Iowa the son of Mathias and Clara (Denner) Kout. He received his education in Lawler attending the Mt. Carmel Catholic School. As a young man, he worked alongside his father on the family farm. On April 4, 1945, at St.Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Spillville, he married Helen Balik. To this union four children were born. The couple lived on a farm near Lawler for many years before selling their farm in 1963 and moving into the town of Lawler. Early in his marriage, he began working as a carpenter and enjoyed it so much he made his career building and remodeling many projects throughout northeast Iowa. He semi-retired in 1984. John and Helen loved to travel throughout the U.S. and took several cruises together. They also has a passion for attending polka dances and traveled as far as needed to enjoy them. Helen died suddenly on January 21, 2002 at the age of 82. John enjoyed fishing, golfing and playing cards whenever he had a chance. He especially enjoyed going out to eat and never passed up a chance to tell his stories and visit with friends at coffee. Survivors include one son, John (Carol) Kout of Lawler, three daughters, Margaret (George) Nolte of Nicholasville, KY, Mary (Melvin) Kruse of Lawler and JoAnn (Darold) Mahlstedt of Clear Lake; thirteen grandchildren, Mark Kruse, Mike Kruse, Matt Kruse, Myron Kruse, Marvin Kruse,Dean Mahlstedt, Dale Mahlstedt, Marie Pleggenkuhle, Melanie Kruse, Marjorie Eberling, Ellen Hunley, Jolene Harding and Alicia Rose Imbouathong; twenty-three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Helen; and one brother, Frank Kout.
