John M. Utley, age 82, of New Hampton, IA passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, TX.
John Marcus Utley was born on June 30, 1932 in New Hampton, Iowa to Donald and Charlotte (Kolthoff) Utley. He attended school in New Hampton. John farmed and worked at Rath Packing. He was united in marriage to Mareatta Caspersen on January 7, 1952 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed just East of New Hampton where they have continued to live. They also owned and operated Utley's Tavern until 1993.
John enjoyed spending time in Texas, farming and the outdoors. He especially enjoyed being with family.
John is survived by his wife Mareatta of New Hampton; children Charlotte (Ron) Garcia of New Hartford, IA, Don (Karen) Utley of New Hampton, IA, Judy (Dale Jr.) Straw of Colorado Springs, CO, Thomas (Traci) Utley of New Hampton, IA; brother-in-law Donald (Sharon) Caspersen of New Hampton, IA; 15 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Alice Haus, brothers-in-law Irvin Caspersen and Greg Haus.

Marietta and Family.I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I have many memories of being a child and spending time with your family. With my dads barber shop being next door I remember playing the shuffle board game almost like it was yesterday. May your many memories carry you all through this difficult time. May God grant you all comfort today and every day to come.
Marietta, Charlotte, Donnie, Judy, Tommy Family, You are in my thoughts prayers during this sad time of loss. I have alot of happy cherished memories with your family. I remember John my Dad Merle, working at Rath together, talking about their jobs, coworkers the plant. I remember John always slender, jet black hair, combed to the side with lots of hair tonic in it, ha ha. I remember him drinking Hamms beers. I have fond memories of Saturdays to town. Dad Mike would go to Virgil Andersons Barber Shop, right beside the tavern. Mom I would go to IGA for groceries all meet at Utleys Tavern. I still remember many of the people. Either Marietta or Eva was bartending. Back then it was like a family meeting place. I would play the jukebox, 5 songs for 25 cents. People would make requests for me to play. We loved the bowling machine, 10 cents a game, I think. Louie Geerts would buy me 10 cent Hershey bars. We loved to have pizza or microwave chuckwagons or cheeseburgers, was a treat. Wed climb up on the bar stool to reach the Old Dutch chip rack on the end of the bar. I was always scared to use the bathroom in the card room in the back. I remember the girls babysitting us. Charolette taught swimming lessons we went to the park. Also to Groves Pizza for candy sticks. I remember the big, old out of tune piano in your living room. Dad bought it for me later on. I remember the twisted stairs, beautiful woodwork the toys upstairs. There was Judys Skipper doll, barbies a bear with cymbals. I remember Judy selling girl scout cookies too. We had raisins for a snack. We always loved going there, the girls even when the boys watched us once in awhile. May God give you the strength peace you need. The loss of my parents left 2 holes in my heart. Those were the 2 pcs. they took to Heaven. Love God Bless, Debbie (Vorwald) Morrison

Mareatta, To you and your entire family, our thoughts and prayers on the sudden passing of John. Having just talked to you and John the day before, it brings to mind how suddenly something can happen. I know the two of you shared a laugh every day. Please accept our sincere condolences for the loss of your loved one. This is one of the most difficult things we must face in our life. May it comfort you to know that others are deeply touched by your loss. God assures us at Psalms 3418 that he is near to those broken in heart and those crushed in spirit he saves. Jesus also promises that we will be able to see our loved ones again. Jesus own words found at John 528,29 tells us there will be a resurrection. What a wonderful hope! God says that soon on the earth there will be no more pain, suffering and especially death at Revelation 213-5 We anxiously await the day when we will no longer lose those we love.
