Jeanne M. Schilling age 92 of New Hampton, IA died Sunday, March 27, 2022 at Colonial Manor of Elma. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday June 10, 2023 at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home & Crematory in New Hampton. There will be a one-hour visitation prior to the service. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in New Hampton. 641-394-4334. Jeanne was born February 26, 1930 in New Hampton, IA the daughter of Edward and Marie (Morrissey) Schilling. She attended high school in New Hampton and graduated in May 1947. She attended the University of Northern Iowa, and after 2 years she decided to spend an additional 2 years in Austria. Throughout her life she held many nice secretarial jobs. She was secretary to the Commanding Officer of Buckley Naval Air Station in Denver, CO, and was also a secretary at the American Embassy in Vienna, Austria. Around 1963 she was offered the opportunity to take a test to apply for a new career field in the government for data processing. She passed this test and found a job at the Rock Island Arsenal in Rock Island, IL. She continued to work there until she retired in 1989. After she retired, she was able to consolidate all her accumulated credit hours and complete her Bachelors Degree for Western Illinois University in 1993. From 1992 - 1995 she volunteered tutoring and teaching English as a second language for about 40 hours a week. This was in preparation for serving in the Peace Corps. From 1995 - 1997 she served as a teacher in the Peace Corps in Hungary. She traveled to Ireland twice to meet her Irish relatives on her mother’s side accompanied by her special cousin, Mary Eileen Breitbach of New Hampton, IA. She also did a lot of traveling within the continental United States. Jeanne was very sociable and maintained many relationships with her friends until her health interfered. During her retirement she was active in volunteering at her church and in her community. Jeanne was an extremely dedicated Catholic, was quite frugal, but also quite generous. In addition to leaving specific bequests to family members, she gave the bulk of her estate to the following organizations: St. .Pius X Catholic Church, Rock Island, IL; Holy Family Catholic Church, New Hampton IA; St. Mary’s Ministry, Rock Island, IL; Humility of Mary Shelter, Davenport, IA; St. Dominic’s Major Seminary, Lusaka, Zambia; Augustana College, Rock Island, IL; St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA; Western Illinois University, Macomb, IL; American Heart Association; American Cancer Society; Alzheimer’s Association; and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation. She was survived by two brothers, Joseph (Barb) Schilling of Jacksonville, AR, (now deceased), John (Louise) Schilling of Los Angeles, CA; special cousin, Mary Eileen Breitbach of New Hampton, IA; and niece and nephew, Kevin Schilling and Erin Higgins both of Los Angeles, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Walter Schilling.

  1. Joe and John families, my sympathy and prayers to all of the Schillings. I think of Jean as she joined me at Mass and on a rare occasion in visiting her parents as I was her parents neighbor. She was very pleasant and jovial with concern for others always.
