Jean Marie Daniel was born April 13, 1944, in Fonda, IA, the daughter of Jacob and Wilma (Stangel) Nagengast. She received her education in Varina and was a 1962 graduate of the Pocahontas High School. She and her future husband, Bob met while in school where she was a cheerleader for his basketball team. On February 23, 1963, at St. Columbkille’s Catholic Church in Varina, she married her high school sweetheart. To this union five children were born; first a son, followed by a daughter and then three more boys. As Bob worked for the telephone company and had to move frequently, the couple lived in Albert City, Schleswig, Knoxville, Chariton, Iowa before their last move to New Hampton in 1989.
After her children were raised, Jean enjoyed working as a librarian in Chariton and as an office assistant at Sullivan Insurance Agency in New Hampton where she met many people and friends. Jean was an avid gardener, enjoying her time outdoors with her flowers and was a golfer for many years getting a hole-in-one at the New Hampton Golf and Country Club. Her family remembers her as always being busy around the house, enjoying decorating and making craft items for each of her grandchildren. She was especially excited to decorate for Christmas, making their home special for everyone. Jean was a bridge and bunco player over the years and had many dear and close friends.
Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Bob; four sons, Alan (Lisa) Daniel of Gurnee, IL, Mark (Diane) Daniel of Chariton, IA, Brian (Kim) Daniel of Westerville, OH, Steve (Vicki) Daniel of Tipton, IA; one daughter, Patty (Jim) Shanks of Libertyville, IL; fourteen grandchildren, Adam, Bradley, Noah and Matthew Daniel; Zach and Connor Shanks; Jessica, Brady and Dillon Daniel; Brea and Cole Daniel; Sommer, Levi and Beckham Daniel; one great-granddaughter, Jade Hildenbrand; one brother, Dennis (Del) Nagengast of Pocahontas, IA; one sister, Carol Briggs of WI; sister-in-law, Ruth Nagengast of Albert City, IA.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Ervin and Jack Nagengast.
