James 'Jim' Sheffner age 65 of Fredericksburg, Iowa died Friday, May 22, 2015, at his home, surrounded by his family Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 30, 2015, at St. Peter's Lutheran Church - Richfield, rural Sumner with Pastor Wayne Ellingson presiding. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Fredericksburg. Friends may greet the family 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Friday, May 29, 2015, at the Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg. Visitation continues an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. James Leroy “Jim” Sheffner was born March 29, 1950, in Charles City, IA, the son of Walter and Elouise (Janssen) Sheffner. He attended schools in Charles City and Nashua, receiving his GED in 2005 from NEICC. Jim was baptized and confirmed on May 31, 1970, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church – Richfield. On August 8, 1970, jim was united in marriage to Ruth Schmadeke at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church – Richfield. To this union two children were born. Jim and Ruth made their first home in Bassett, IA. In 1973, they began farming near Colwell, IA. Following a farm accident in 1974, they moved their family to rural Fredericksburg and later rural Sumner where Jim worked for area farmers doing what he loved most; farming. Due to failing health, Jim and Ruth moved into Fredericksburg in 2004 and Jim retired from farming. Survivors include his wife, Ruth; one son, Jay (Jennifer) Sheffner of Fairfax; one daughter, Jill (Brad) Johnson of Cedar Rapids; four grandsons, Cooper Johnson, Dane, Gavin and Cannon Sheffner; two brothers, Ray Sheffner of Ionia and Bert (Sandy) Sheffner of Charles City; one sister, Jean (Marty) Birding of Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Jan Sheffner of Floyd and Marcella Sheffner of Kokamo, IN; three brothers-in-law, Donald Mason of Phoenix, AZ, Robert (Nancy) Schmadeke of Cypress, TX and Richard (Kathy) Schmadeke of Fredericksburg; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Ty Michael Johnson; one sister, Betty Mason; three brothers, Ronald Sheffner, Tom Sheffner and Roger Sheffner.
