James Newton Atterberry, known affectionately as Jim by friends and family, left this world on October 1, 2024, in Carrollton, IL, at the age of 74. Born on March 2, 1950, in Petersburg, IL, Jim’s zest for life and adventurous spirit touched all who knew him.
Jim’s early years in Petersburg laid the foundation for a life of service and hard work. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the United States Army and served with honor in the Vietnam War. His time in the service instilled in him a sense of duty and pride that he carried with him throughout his life.
Upon returning to civilian life, Jim pursued his passion for driving, a vocation that allowed him to see many parts of the country. He drove a truck for ACH Humko for a quarter of a century, his journey taking him to countless destinations and adventures. Later, he continued his career with WW Transport until his well-deserved retirement.
One fateful day, while taking a break at Klunders Kafe in New Hampton, Jim’s life took a turn for the romantic. It was there that he met Anita Harris, a waitress whose charm and grace captivated him. Their conversation sparked a love story that led them down the aisle on April 17, 1993, at the Republic Community Church in rural Nashua, IA. Together, they built a life in Greenfield, IL, where their love and companionship flourished.
Jim’s interests outside of work reflected his love for the simple pleasures in life. He was known to enjoy a leisurely cruise through the local countryside, appreciating the beauty of the world from behind the wheel. At home, he was a formidable card player, always ready to challenge friends and family to a friendly game, no matter the occasion.
His sociable nature meant that Jim never met a stranger. He loved to visit and could strike up a conversation with anyone, and his thoughtful and generous spirit made him a beloved figure in his community.
An avid sports enthusiast, Jim developed a particular fondness for the Iowa Hawkeyes women’s basketball team. He was an avid fan of Caitlin Clark and hardly missed a game, his enthusiasm for the team as fervent as any lifelong supporter.
Those who knew Jim will remember him as a man of adventure and kindness, always ready to lend a hand or share a story. His generosity of spirit and ability to make the ordinary extraordinary will be deeply missed.
Jim is survived by his wife, Anita Atterberry of Greenfield, IL; son James (Sue Smith) Atterberry Jr. of Belleville, IL; one step-daughter, Heather (Jeff) Loyete of Greenfield, IL; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Claude (Shelly) Atterberry of Godfrey, IL, Ernest (Sally) Atterberry of Oxville, IL; one sister, Patricia (Les) Pittman of Granite City, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Anthony; brothers, Bill, George, Charles, and Paul Atterberry; sisters, Judy Mayberry and Margaret Kissinger.
